Can anyone tell me what the hell the button at the top of the fly (the side with the buttonholes) does on Ambrosi-style pants? I can't for the life of my figure it out.

It fastens between the bar tacks on the other side. Most, if not all, of my Neapolitan trousers have that.
It goes in the small buttonhole that is incorporated in the seam between the waistband and front.
