I don't want to use google anymore (neither as a mail provider nor as a search engine), they're just getting too creepy.

Does anyone know good, independent alternatives?

If I had to, I'd also pay a little just to be really independent. At the moment, I'm using forestle as a search engine, which works fine, so I'm mainly looking for a mail provider.

Can you explain "too creepy" ? I am currently using both gmail and google search. Is there something we should know?

There's lots of things... in a nutshell I think it's enough that they're just heaping up tons of information about everything. You (by scanning your mail and searches), general knowledge in form of books (the whole settlement is a scandal if you ask me) etc.
They just gain too much power.

Aol, bing (microsoft) and yahoo would be quite similar I suppose; there have to be independent providers.

Use the e-mail account that your university has provided for you.

Take a pill! What do you expect a search engine to provide? Partial info? Selected info? Go to the library if you want specific info w/o your person being victimized!

Thought about that as well... but then everyone will know what university I am at. Also, it'd feel weird for the Appreciation newsletters.

No offense, but I don't think you're that important.

What information? What I am looking at every day on the internet? I could give a flying fu@k! People like you amaze me. I bet you are one of those ACLU DB's who feel like your rights are being trampled on at every moment. Get it together...you are surfing the web. If you are on NAMBLA and work at a pre-school, I see your issue. If you don't and don't..as stated..take a pill!

Well sure, if they printed it they could slice your finger with the paper.
