Alternatives to chinos for summer wear?

Gentlemen,

What are some alternatives to chinos for summer wear aside from denim? That is, for equal or greater formality, not lesser.

Chinos are IMO terrible for summer wear. Tightly woven cotton in generally heavier weights, no thank you.

Agree with above:
Tropical, high-twist, and/or open-weave wool (lots of choices - e.g. Standeven Explorer, Fox Air, Dugdale New Fine Worsted, VBC/Drapers 4-ply, etc.)
Linen or linen-cotton (drapes better than 100% linen)

Thanks everyone for the many suggestions here.

Some of these are quite good and I will be looking into them. I probably will pass on the linen, if only because I find linen is such a friggin' pain ********** to maintain because of how easily it wrinkles and stains.
