Altering Non-Functional Buttonholes

I am still on the fence regarding functional and non-functional buttonholes.

On one hand, functional has practical uses, although to be honest, I've rarely used it and if I did, it was always with a casual sports coat in a casual setting.

The biggest problem I see with functional buttonholes, is the fact that you can't really resell the item as easily since altering the sleeve length would affect how the buttons looked.

So my question is, would non-functional buttonholes alleviate this issue? Is it difficult to remove the threading for non-functioning buttonholes in order to make them functional? Or do they simply just cut a **** where it's supposed to be and work around it?

This depends on the type of button-hole that has been sewn. Sometimes they are done ready to be cut, so you can simply cut through the middle, but this is not normally the case. If they are not done like this, then you have to remove the stitching and sew a new button-hole, which should never be a problem; the stitching might leave holes on some particularly light fabrics but in most cases it will not be noticable.

It depends on the fabric. Depending on the fabric and how thick the non-functional holes are sewn it can sometimes leave marks that do not come out. Functional is not needed, it just is a little extra thing most never notice. I only have them on most of my jackets, since my tailor charges 50 dollars to do the sleeve work with or without making the holes functional.

What is your question? What issue are you alleviating?

I was unsure of the difference in value/demand of the same suit with non-functional buttonholes since I didn't know how much damage would have been done.
