Altering a Pea Coat

Hey I just received a J. Crew Pea Coat as an addition to my winter wardrobe, and I had a question. I realize J.Crew has a reputation for making ill-fitting merchandise, but is all hope lost? Is it possible to bring in this coat at the waist? What about the sleeves? Would a good tailor be able to bring those up an inch as well? I should mention this coat is lined, with Thinsulate (scoff if you will). How much would such major surgery cost? (I am a poor college student) I would be grateful to hear any responses. Thanks a lot.

I had a J.Crew pea coat taken in at the waist a year or two ago. Didn't come out perfect but it certainly looked better. Any decent alterations tailor should be able to do it.

I also had a J Crew pea coat taken in at the waist a few years ago. It came out great, and I still wear the coat several times each winter.

It's worth getting a tailor's opinion and cost extimate. However, is a J. Crew peacoat worth spending the money on tailoring?

Well I received it as a pseudo-gift from their "final sale" so it is not really returnable, but it also didn't cost me anything. So i guess in that sense, it would depend on the cost of the alterations. Any estimates floating around? Or inexpensive alternative pea coats?

If it was on finale sale recently, then I'm assuming that it was last winter's model? I ordered one in size L-tall and it fits great, definitely slimmer than most J. Crew outerwear. Still, it's not super-slim (but neither am I).
