Hi,

I wonder what kind of alterations have to be made if one would like to make a 40R sport jacket out of a 40L. I guess it's mainly the length of the jacket and the sleeves that have to be altered.

Are there tailors around who are professional enough to perform such an alteration? Do you think the result of such an alteration can be as good as the real 40R?

Please let me know,

Mike

I would advise against this because the pockets would have to be moved too (else they would be too close to the bottom edge of the new 40R).

Perhaps it would help us to know what your personal clothing measurements are and your height might be useful too. What suit and sport coat brands do you have and in which sizes? Today I just purchased a nice handmade linen suit by Massimo Bizzochi in U.S. size 40 long and trying it on at the store what was immediately noticable was the need for alternation of the sleeve and the area across the rear shoulders. I don't mind a bit extra length in the coat itself so I'm going to have the tailor look at it and get his opinion. I'm just under six feet tall and on the slim side with a long torso and therefore looking to see if it would work.

I am not sure you can "move" the pockets (it depends on the kind of pockets). I think I read somewhere on this forum that it depends on the distance between the top of the pocket to the bottom of the jacket - I believe 9" was the minimum. The suggested adjustment to lenght IIRC was 1/2" at most. I am sure others more experienced than I can add to this though.

You really wouldn't want to shorten more than a 1/2 inch, 1 inch tops, and that may even look a little off.
