Greetings,
I'm about to order my first pair of AEs and wonder if they are true to size.
I'm wearing 10.5 regular and not sure if that is a D?
However, I also can't decide between the Hastings or Fairfax model, mostly because of the color (chestnut/chili antibes)
Which one is more versatile?

Hastings: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7159687.html

Fairfax: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7146418.html

I haven't seen the Hastings on STP, maybe someone knows a better deal?

Cheers, Gordon

In my experience, they fit true to size, but different lasts will fit your feet differently. I've definitely seen the Hastings on STP before. The zappos prices aren't great. Are you really sold on these particular models? STP has quite a few for sale right now, and there are both new and used models on ebay.

Also, you can go try some on in the store. M.S. McClellan in Knoxville sells AE.

Suggest you try them on in a brick and mortar store first. I have the Haastings, and after a little darkening with cordovan and brown paste to antique them, they really look good.

Fairfax in Chestnut. No question for me. The bicycle-toe-thing on the Hastings is weird, and I prefer AE's chestnut to the Chili color.

Should be on the same last as the Allen Edmonds Park Avenue. Do you know your size in the Park Avenue?

My preference would be for the Fairfax in chili, if you can get it.

Thanks Gentlemen,
I searched Ebay and didn't like the offers very much.
Park Avenue only in black and I need some browns.
I agree, the Hastings toe looks a little weird.
STP has the Fairfax in my size but it says "red brown"?
Is that the chili or chestnut, or neither?
It's hard to find the chili color properly photographed.
I guess as the name implies, it would be more to the red hue.
I'll swing by the store coachvue suggested.
Cheers.

What STP is calling light red brown is probably AE's chestnut. although you really can't be sure.

...the Fairfax in Chestnut and Black, the Hastings in Chili. The Fairfax in Chestnut is the lighter brown, the Hastings in Chili is a deeper reddish-brown. I think the Fairfax on STP is the Chestnut. Both are on the 5 last, and in my opinion they run true to most Italian sizes I've purchased. For example, in most US made shoes I'm a 10, in many/most Italian shoes I'm a 9.5 (the size of my AE's). I get lots of compliments on both shoes. AE has an official site on e-bay where they sell "irregulars" at about half price, and the pair of Fairfax I bought had no perceptible flaws whatsoever, and were new-in-the-box. Zappos had some on sale recently, but you are probably limited to what they have in stock; they told me they probably are not getting more in. I also saw the Fairfax at my local Filenes, in DC, though that was a few weeks ago.

Good luck - these are great shoes.

You can't, but I suspect that the light red/brown is actually chili.

I'm not sure the fairfax was ever made in chili, at least not as a regular item. Although it should have been. AFAIK, every online store listing I ever saw had the fairfax in three colors - black, chestnut and merlot.

Has anyone ever seen a Fairfax in chili?

Personally, I think AE should make available in chili, but that's just me....

Well, I have them both, the Fairfax in chestnut/tan and the Hastings in black. Both fit similarly, if I recall correctly they are both on the same last as the Park Avenue. 10d in all three for me. Both look surprisingly elegant for AE shoes.

M.S. McClellan,
what a nice store, soo many beautiful garments in there, i wish i could afford to shop there.
They had AEs in stock, but not in my size so i ordered the Fairfax from STP. STP says the red brown is chestnut (live chat).
I got the last pair in my size, yay!
I'm so excited, can't wait to get them.
How do i care for them?
Cheers, G.

Start out with cedar shoe trees. You can buy Woodlore brand trees from grapevinehill.com or stores like Marshalls. You'll also need some leather conditioner and polish. You can just go back to M.S. McClellan for that.
