Allen Edmonds shoes, new, for $18.50...

...unfortunately, they are from 1977 and they look like this.

I'm an AE fan ($mall timer), but I do find 2/3 of their shoes to be unwearably ugly. Usually because those models are too trendy and stray from classic design. I thought this was a recent development until I went through the '77 catalog.

Huh, I always thought sharkskin was a '50s-'60s thing.

At risk of inciting group ire, I have to admit to buying and still wearing a pair of black calf on black shark Shelton's, purchased from AE for the princely sum of $265 (I think). I also note that after many years of wear, those sharkskin Sheltons look as good as the day I first pulled them from the box. Perhaps homely but, lovable and certainly not ugly!
