Allen-Edmonds Resoling?

I've got a pair of Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenues that are going to require resoling soon. My question is twofold--will a local cobbler (assuming they are competent of course) be able to resole them? And if so, will this prevent Allen Edmonds from doing recrafting on them at a later point?

I'd send them to Allen Edmonds, but they don't need anything other than a resoling at this point, so I feel the full recrafting may be something of a waste at this point.

It depends on how the work is done by the cobbler. I had two pairs that had half soles put on by a local cobbler. I called AE to ask about recrafting and they said they cannot tell without seeing the shoes. They said send them in (free shipping) and let them look. If they cannot do it, they will send them back free.

They were able to recraft both pair I sent in.

As far as what to do - I don't think they offer just a resoling since you have to remove the heel to resole, so you have to do new heels when you do a resole. And the refinish is just to make them look new again.

Yeah, I'm worried about it since I will certainly want to get the recrafting in the future. I suppose that since a good resole isn't much different in price, I might as well just go ahead and do it--I just hate being without my shoes for that long.

As a side note, I need to figure out how to get better life out of my leather soled shoes. I take good care of them, but I'm having to resole them every year--less in some cases. I mean, I know NY life is hard on shoes, but sheesh...

What about Topys (or something similar)? What's the collective wisdom on those, and how they might impact AEs ability to recraft/resole?

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
