Got mine today. Definitely a little underwhelmed with the quality of the finish. Not a bad looking shoe but a little below what I was expecting.

The dullness of the shell caused me to immediately start brushing the shoe. Then I decided to wipe down with a damp cloth (my normal maintenance routine), big mistake. A huge amount of either polish or dye transferred to my rag. More vigorous brushing didn't give them much of a shine. Ultimately had to resort to a little color 8 polish and more brushing and buffing. They look much better but don't quite pop like I had hoped.

I also just received my order from a recent AE trunk show. Finish on these is a little better but they actually got the order wrong. Nice shoe, just not what I ordered. I mentioned this to the AE rep and no response.

I rarely complain and don't mean to sound like one now. Just a little disappointed. I hope you guys a happier with yours as I know I was really pushing for these. I was excited by their potential.

I didn't take out-of-the-box pic's. Again, after seeing them the first thing I did was to start brushing them. Still seemed pretty dull so the next step was to wipe with a slightly damp rag and begin brushing again. Here are shots of my rag and the shoe after wiping.

Here's a couple pic's of the shoes......

Suffice it to say I was pretty surprised. Most of my experience with shell is with Alden and I've never experienced anything like this. Ultimately they cleaned up and are acceptable. Nothing to write home about, but passable.

I've taken them upstairs but I'll post 'after' pic's tomorrow.

Don't do that. You can do that to Alden shell because of the heavy coating they use on top of Horween's finish.

If those pictures are representative of how the shoes look, you have every right to be disappointed.

Too late now but if a $600 pair of shoes cannot stand wiping down with a very very damp cloth, then wow, I have mad a very bad purchasing decision. Painful lesson learned I guess. Thanks, I really do appreciate the input.

The shoes should definitely be able to take it and it looks like they didn't handle it well. But outside of Alden, that isn't a good plan for shining shell.

i think it's fine that you took off all those layers off. just use some reno and buff it with a brush. the shine should return.

alden shell has a better pop but the pair of strands you have there is atypical of ae shell, even out of the box. see if using reno/brushing help out a bit.
