Allen Edmonds Damaged After 4 Wears

So I was never a big shoe guy in general, but after reading here, I decided to start buying Allen Edmonds as a good value play on quality. I started off with some brown Strands to wear for interviews and random other occasions. I was wearing it the other day and I notice a large chunk of the leather on the front sole of the shoe ripped off and showing (light colored)

. I thought these would last me years... it's very disappointing in general as I recently bought some Walnut McAllisters as well. I've emailed Allen Edmonds and I'm sending them in for them to look at. They said if they don't think the leather is "defective," then they'll simply send them back...

Could these be scuffs caused by YOU?

Oftentimes when something is perceived as a "value" then less cuddling is applied.

SF'ers shuffles along the street in their G&G/EG Top Drawers for fear of any crease/damage...etc. Inordinate amount of care/babying is paid because they are perceived as some prize/trophy worthy of being worshiped. Such is cannot be said of the lowly Allen Edmonds.

There should be no reason why a large chunk of the sole would rip off under normal use.

Definitely needs pictures.

My AE are fine and dandy. Looking better than ever after a year and a half of use.

Be quiet pleb. I once purchased a pair of AEs on a dare. The shoes creased after just one wear - Off the side of my yacht they went. Clearly a manufacturing flaw.

Before the assault on the company, which probably will send you a service envelope and such, I would work off the assumption that leather is a natural product, and I am sure that out there there exists a sole leather blank with a flaw in it that will make it through manufacturing unnoticed.

I would however expect AE to make it right.

I would also expect the store I purchased them from to make it right.

What am I paying for then? I thought they were supposed to be higher quality than most alternatives....

Historically brown was considered a "country" color for a shoe, suitable for walking around dirt roads and such. As fashion rules only slowly change, some still consider brown inappropriate for an office. While unlikely, if your interviewer is of this opinion, you may be screwing yourself out of the job the minute you walk into the room. The brogueing on the Strand also makes it more casual, which may work against you if you wish to demonstrate an air of professionalism. Black captoe is probably the best choice for a typical interview environment. Ignore all this if your interviews are in a "creative" field.

If I step on a nail and take a chunk out of my shoe, I can't blame the maker for poor quality, even if I paid $2000 for the pair. High quality goods doesn't mean they cannot be damaged.

I don't know what happened in your case, but it's not clear it's the fault of the maker. If you posted pictures, maybe we would have a better idea of what the problem is.
