    Custom Shell Saddle Shoe update:

I heard back from my contact(s) at AE and they agreed to do the custom shell saddle shoe for no additional charge over the regular shell shoe price, plus they'll throw in a pair of free shoe trees and free shipping. This was assuming we could do 10 of these custom shell shoes. It was unclear to me whether we all need to order the same exact shoe, or just reference some "deal code" to get the aforementioned pricing. I will find that out.

My initial thought is a traditional shell saddle shoe, with burgundy vamp and quarters, black shell "saddle" and "foxing," regular welt (not split/reverse), double-leather sole, and probably black sole edge. J.R. soles (same as all other shell shoes).

#2: a walnut shell vamp and quarters, burgundy shell (or maybe brown shell?) "saddle" and "foxing," regular welt, double-leather JR sole, and "natural" sole edge. (this is all assuming availability of the walnut or some other lighter-color brown shell).

#3: dark brown shell vamp and quarters, walnut "saddle" and "foxing", regular welt, natural sole edge, double-leather JR sole. (again, assuming availability of walnut or some other lighter color shell)

Thoughts? Also, I'd like to know who's in, so we can let them know a minimum of X will be ordered...

Thanks for doing this bucksfan! Because I already have #1 (but not in shell), I also prefer #2 the best. But would still get #1 if that was the only option and we could get 10 people together. Count me in either way.

I highly recommend the saddle in burgundy/black. Here's a pair of AE Polos in shell cordovan that I picked up several years ago.

What's the stamp for seconds? Is it the little brown mark on the soles?

    must. . .resist. . . .group buy. . . .my new(old) Polos. . .are. . ..enough. . .ahhhhhhh!

Got those Polos yesterday but haven't had a chance to take some pics. I was expecting to have to send them right to recrafting, but they're pretty wearable as-is. Other than needing new heel lifts (that's what the rubber on the heel is called, right?) the soles are in pretty decent shape. I'll try to get pics tomorrow!

If you had a bad experience with JAB shoe trees, then you need to stay away from AE full toe trees. They are the same. Incidentally, most of my trees are either Alden (split toe, size L) or AE/JAB (full toe, size M).

Thanks for the heads up on that. I'll for sure stay away from Jos.A.B and AE trees, then.
My main problem with the Jos.A.B trees were not only that they were too wide, but the edge was too pointed on inside toe part, which left that crease (it's getting a bit better). The Alden trees however had smoother edges, so even if they were too wide, they wouldn't dig in the side of the shoe with a sharp horizontal edge.

Also, both are size XL - M, both say that they're made for 13 D.

Number two is a good look, but it may be hard to get that kind of contrasting with the relatively dark shade of the walnut shell.

:nodding: I was going to note that you need to get some darker jeans which aren't too long on the inseam
