Has AE quality gone down in noticeable ways?

After about a 10 year hiatus I've started buying AEs again. I have some AEs that are over 10 years old and it looks like the new ones are in worse shape than the old ones.

I bought another pair yesterday, and the sales guy mentioned that the pair I was wearing were shot. They are AE but I don't remember the model. They're not on the web site any more. I told him that they looked that way a few weeks after I got them. He said they were corrected grain and a bad shoe.

I take good care of my shoes. Safir polish, good trees, and only recrafted by AE.

Not sure it is a shift in quality as much as a shift in purpose. AE was a steadfast gentlemans shoe company...fine shoes that were for the most part no-nonsense and sturdy and crafted from well known quality leathers. It seems in the last 10 years there has been a notable desire of AE to try and capture a younger market and try new things(shapes, designs, new hides with new tanning techniques and mixing in more euro flair). I can think of as many solid built classics(and a few new designs) as I can what seem to be failled attempts at a new thing or "fun" shoe. I still love them and will continue to buy them as long as they dont totally abandon the tried and true.

Just wanted to chime in about the Patriot fit -
I really wanted a pair of these but had been afraid about the fit issues. (Also want to wait until they have my size available in the shoebank - which, since they're new, might take awhile!) They don't have my size in ANY stores near me (12B). I know I could order them and keep sending them back as I try them, but 1) as I said, I want to wait for seconds and 2) there's only so much I can get used to walking around the only carpeted section of my house (around my bed)!
I was especially concerned with these points:
1) some people say they're too big
2) some people say they run small
3) some people have a real problem with the tightness around the strap of the loafer - this one was particularly concerning me as it's tough to tell how much this will stretch over time until you wear them for real (not just in your house)
So I saw a pair pop up on ebay that looked in decent shape. I snapped them up. Here are the pictures I saw on ebay:
700
700

Obviously the owner had some fit issues - especially with the right shoe. A lot of creasing, but good enough for me to try these out. At $50, they're great kick arounds if nothing else!
So here are the pics of what I got (excuse the poor pictures). I included my feet in very colorful wool socks I happened to be wearing:
700
700

I took those pictures the other day because I was going to ask about fit. It definitely tapers into the strap and then tapers back out again. Here's where i am with regards to fit, though. With the exception of the tightness around the strap, they fit a LITTLE larger than most of my other AE shoes. The fit would be closest (in my opinion, and from my own shoe collection) to my Malverns - which I think are on the 1 last. The weird part is that the strap, when I tried it on, felt like it was a size too small. It's TIGHT as others have mentioned. This is where the confusion is coming in whether it runs large or small. It runs large, but the strap is too small. For me, at least, this TOTALLY works. I spent hours one day trying on loafers in the AE store one day and could not find a single loafer that fit me. Either it was ready to slip off my foot or it was too tight. I think the strap on these is exactly what keeps it in check on my foot. It pretty much does what a tongue pad would do and keeps my foot pushed back towards the heel. The result is a comfortable loafer that can be a bit less snug than most other shoes, but betight enough not so slip off my heel.
Next up is the insole:
700
700

Notice how the darker part of the insole looks like it was cut out by hand and inserted afterwards? It's definitely strange. I know there was talk about a heel squeeking issue (which I actually have on the right shoe!) - perhaps this was a fix for that?
Anyway, that's my Patriot story. Hopefully this will clear up fit concerns anyone has. Bottom line is that it runs big, but the strap section is small. Weird last, but it works for me!

Funny that you mention this, I also snagged a used pair on eBay.

I went down 0.5 sizes from my Brannock measurement, 9D. For all of your reference I am 9D in 5 last (Strands, Fifth Street, and Cambridge), 8 Last (Quinton ), 800 Last (Kenwood), and 7 Last (MacNeils).

The 8.5D Patriots are about the same size as the 9D Kenwoods except for the aforementioned strap. Anyone with a normal instep is going to have a tough time with these shoes. I find that the length on the 8.5D is perfect with no heel slippage, but it is pretty tight across where the strap is. I am also having a huge squeaking issue, which I think may be coming from the heels. Notice that the heels on the Patriots are different from the heels on other AE shoes.

I am going to try and tough it out and see if the part with the strap will loosen up over time, but they are pretty tight right now.

Here's a pic next to my Kenwoods.

A store in China now but none in Canada!
It's funny you say that. I actually did a report on bringing AE stores to Canada for one of my MBA classes. Granted, it was a little hard to find info, since AE is a private company, but I think the numbers still make sense.

Burgundy shell Leeds.... brand new pair made to order. I placed the order a few months ago and picked them up last week. As you can see, the color is very dark. The shade is virtually identical to my Alden #8s which are also very new except the AE is a little less purple and a little more...brownish, I guess. The flash enhances the lighter red areas.
I recall a discussion about old burgundy vs. new burgundy and I'm not sure which I have here. However, these were definitely made in the last thirty days...

I have to say I much prefer the 'new' shell burgundy shade compared to the old burgundy shade. I love my Leeds & Macneil in burgundy shell but as has been mentioned, the newer ones seem much closer to Alden color 8 if you like that sort of thing (which I do).

With that said, the Alden PTB Barrie fit isn't great while the Leeds #1 last seems custom made to my feet.

Question for anyone who may have experience here. I snagged some 10.5 D brown Long Branches during Black Friday from the Jeffersonville outlet. Got 'em for $195.00.
icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif
When I recieved them, the right boot was beyond my tolerance for a seconds defect. I didn't take a picture, but the leather in the plain space just above the wingtip (where the creases should occur) was all wrinkled and stretched looking. It essentially looked like it had been creased sideways (perpendicular to the place the normal creasing would occur). So I had them send me another pair, and they arrived yesterday. They pretty much look perfect, and I had a hard time figuring out what made them seconds. The issue is, this time they sent me a 10 D by mistake. My heart sank at first, but I decided to try them on anyway. Wearing my normal dress socks, they were snug. I put the 10.5 D pair back on and decided that they may be a bit large if I am wearing the same dress socks (when I tried them on the first time I was wearing a thicker hiking sock). I am a 10.5 D in all my other AE's so far and I know the 1-511 last fits my foot perfectly. This pair of Long Branches almost felt similar to a 7 lasted shoe on my foot (and 7 lasted shoes do make my toes a bit more snug due to the taper, but I wear them anyway). I know it may just come down to a simple choice of wearing a thinner dress sock as opposed to a thicker hiking sock, but I am wondering if I should reasonably expect them to stretch just enough to end up fitting perfectly. Also, they have the thicker foam insole, and I am not sure if it will slightly compress over time allowing more room for my foot. Essentially, I am feeling like I may be slightly between sizes in this boot. In 10.5 D with thick socks they fit well, but with dress socks there is a little room for movement. In 10 D, with dress socks they are snug, and I assume thicker socks would be way too tight. I am inclined to keep them under the assumption that the snugness may alleviate slightly after breaking in and I will definitely wear them around the house for a few days before deciding. I just thought I would put this out there in case anyone has some words of wisdom. If I decide to keep them I'll post pictures soon!

Post pics of the 10.5 showing the creases. May be interested in them if you choose not to keep them. If you were so inclined to sell them instead of send them back of course.

Thanks for your help, gentlemen. I think I'll mull it over for a short while longer and see if I get used to the toe cap or not.

Sorry, I dropped them off with FedEx today on my way to work. I wasn't going to keep that particular pair regardless of my fit question due to the wrinkling. Sorry about that.

It depends on your intended use. If you are going to wear them to the office, (i.e. usually with dress socks) then I would keep the 10's. If you were planning to wear them on weekends/casual attire / thicker socks, I'd consider sending them back and rolling the dice with another 10.5 (maybe check first to make sure there are others out there?). I have found with my own experience that ill-fitting shoes are not going to be worn.

On a side note, I got a very nice complement from the gentleman I was having lunch with today about my new Amsterdams, which I am wearing today for the first time, with a navy suit.

Thanks. My intended use will probably be a mixture of what you said above. I will be wearing them casually on weekends, but I also want them to serve as my rainy weather pair for work/church. There really isn't any reason that I can't wear them with my dress socks on a regular basis I suppose. Not to mention that thick socks during warm/hot months (even on rainy days) may lead to excessive perspiration.
