Two year old Strands polished consistently with AE Walnut polish (since some are concerned about using the Walnut polish):

Wow. They look new to me. I got a pair of walnut strand very recently and just wearing them the second time today. Yours look exactly like the pair I am wearing now. What's the trick to keep them new??

I regularly use the AE conditioner/cleaner and AE Walnut polish. Nothing else.

Really? Interesting, because they looked almost cognac when they were new and darkened with the Walnut polish and time.

My doctor said orthotics can be a temporary thing. Don't lose those old shoes. I find it very hard to fit my orthotic in shoes with a heel - some flat bottomed loafers have worked best. AE has a shoe made for orthotics you might look into.

Sorry... [IMG] Some time you'll have to post a pic of your boot collection - I know I'd be interested to see.

    Those look great! Enjoy.

OK, so I'm relatively new to the SF forums and I'm looking to go on a small spree with AE as a little Xmas gift to myself. I planned to peruse this thread but at 800+ posts there's no way I'm catching up (especially since this thread gets a lot of posts weekly).

    So a few things:

1 - I'm interested in this for my first AE shoe: (http://www.allenedmonds.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producti_SF2411_1_40000000001_-1 Finch black/tan saddle shoe). Why this in particular? It's on sale and I want something relatively inexpensive in case it AE doesn't live up to the hype or in case the shoe doesn't fit well. Also, I want something less dressy that I can wear with jeans and other casual pants. Anyone here have any saddle-type shoes like this that can post some pics of them worn in a little and perhaps a brief review?

2 - This cool aviator-style winter hat (http://www.allenedmonds.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producti_SFAE5009_1_40000000001_-1) I'm stationed someplace cold and windy and plan on traveling even further north so whether you think it's cheesy or not I am in the market for some warm headgear and I don't like the look of earmuffs. Anyone buy one of these yet?

3 - Looking into a Walnut Dalton...I've seen some photos in the gallery but was wondering if anyone had any recent reviews - preferably someone experiencing snowy/wet weather...I know natural leather isn't waterproof but how resistant is it assuming regular polishing?

4 - Lastly, I'm looking at a bunch of the accessories they offer: cedar hangers, cedar shavings inserts, and customizable shoe trees....I bought some bags of cedar shavings to stick in my workout shoes and issued boots and like them compared to what I used to do (I used to use dryer sheets since they also absorb moisture and smell good but you have to throw them away after a while). Anyone have any honest opinions of these accessories available on AE? Also, do you have to throw out cedar shavings inserts after a while and, if so, how long are they good for?

Thanks...sorry for the long post and I appreciate any and all feedback....hopefully after Christmas and New Year I can contribute further to this active thread...

    ~Johnny

Please do not buy that shoe. Call the shoebank. I'm sure they have a Fitch 2nd in your size in all tan or if you must try to be different tan/navy.

You know, I actually hadn't thought about the length until you asked that. That's a good thing, though, right? Length is pretty spot on. If I was judging the size by length alone I would say they run TTS. As far as the rest of the room in the toe box - it's roomy. Room on the sides and room on the top. In fact, the creasing you see on the right shoe will probably stay forever just because there is room over the toe.

Another progress report since today was the first day I wore them ALL DAY at work. The right shoe in the strap area was tighter than the left. Enough where I was concerned in the morning that it might get too tight as my feet swelled. It definitely gave throughout the day. It's definitely just as (if not MORE) comfortable than it was this morning!

I'm no expert on cedar or your first three points, so i'll leave those to someone else. Might I suggest, though, that you check out the Joseph A Bank shoe trees when they have 65% or 70% off or one of their buy 1 get 2 free sales? They're the same exact trees. In fact, when I ordered my Strands, they asked me if i needed trees. I explained that I had the JAB trees already and the woman said that they were the same. If you can't wait or don't want your trees to have the JAB logo on them, the shoebank is selling trees for something like $15 right now. Worth a pickup! ;)

    don't buy that shoe.

call the AE shoebank, get a pair of walnut strand seconds, i believe they're $199 or something. you can also get walnut strands for $225 or so in the B&S.

for various reasons, it's really hard to pick out your first pair of nice shoes. get either strands or daltons, in walnut. both are tried and true shoes that are SF-approved because they're versatile and well made. once you've been in this little world for a while, you'll develop a better sense of what does and doesn't work for you. in the meantime, don't consider anything else other than walnut strands or daltons. if you can't afford them right now, either buy seconds or save up. you might end up buying more/different shoes later on, but you'll never regret strands/daltons in walnut.

The Finch in tan is one of my favorite shoes, and I look forward to wearing it more than any of my current AE's. The 1-511 last feels like it was made for my foot, and look forward to a pair of boots that are on the way to my house as we speak on the same last. Sorry, but I don't have any pictures of them on my feet though.
