I'm familiar with Patek and his big timer status from the Brooks Brothers thread and know he did not mean anything by his comments. I don't think he was one of the original triumverate, though.

Just applied one coat of Neatsfoot oil to my replacement tan Cronmoks. Once the oil soaked in for about an hour the color was approaching AE's walnut finish, but matte and a bit muted. Later tonight I plan to do another round and let it settle overnight, then I'll try to post some pictures.

No way am I on par with "big timer status" I am under SF secret service protection though.

No offense intended. Did I just pull a Romney? I am just used to reading all of the bespoke threads here (for the record I am not a Romney supporter nor do I own any bespoke shoes--MTO is the best I have). From my understanding AE is a great shoe for the money and I just ordered a pair of Lubbock on sale for $199.

However, I'm not totally out of touch as my price comparison to a nice meal is spot on. I took my girlfriend out on Friday night for dinner--drinks and no wine. Bill came to $240 with tip. This is Philly pricing not NY pricing. Food was consumed and gone and not thought about again. A $200 pair of shoes, albeit nice shoes, cost less than dinner. So, while I expect them to last much longer than dinner my point was that they are not the crown jewels; they are merely shoes that one day be consumed and go to the rubbish/recycling pile.

Or, think of it this way, $200 is about three to four fill-ups of gas. While the gas also gets you to work, most people don't freak out when their tank is on empty.

I know most men don't spend as much money on shoes and clothes as SF members do but that is because we have different priorities and understand the value of craftmanship and nice things.

I was not trying to belittle anyone's shoes, I made comments along the lines that AE makes a great rainy day shoe is you can pick them up for $200 which beats running around in the rain in a brand new pair of $1,200 shoes.

The 20% coupon from the email list signup DOES NOT work on Allen Edmonds shoes. I just tried pasting it into the promo code box, and it was rejected by the system.

The fine print says that the coupon only applies to shoes sold DIRECTLY by Amazon. Amazon sells the Allen Edmonds indirectly via Allen Edmonds.

Is there a different code I should be looking at?

There are pictures in the wild, and then there are pictures in the wild like where this eagle lives in the Mn. Arrowhead just South of the boundary water canoe area wilderness:

Just came back from 4 days grouse hunting there and took along the Bayfields. Tried them for a couple of hours because it has been so dry. Working typical grouse cover which is 10-12 year old regrowth and high stepping through timber cutting trimmings and thick brush. After a couple of hours that was enough for both the boots and my feet. They do work well for a camp boot though:

I've hunted rough grouse in the foothills of the Olympic and Cascade mountains along Puget Sound. And traditional coverts from New England down through the Middle Atlantic States into Western NC. And now in Mn. and Wi. After years of chasing them I had Russell build me a custom pair of boots MTM for my feet about 7 years ago.

According to the GPS they have seen more than a 1,000 miles in the woods, cost as much as shell and never been on pavement. And can take a lot of abuse without any issue. They are a true cap toe, the added leather on the toe is a $50 option but well worth it as busting brush that is the first thing to wear out. More than likely the reason I feel a plain toe is more formal than a cap toe is the origin of the cap toe is add life to a shoe due to work of one type or another. And a cap toe traditionally should be short and stubby as shown on the Sheep Hunters [IMG]

I love the Bayfield's. Have the brown CXL and black. They are sleek compared to most boots, look sharp IMO, and hold up extremely well in town. Although I would highly recommend going up one size in width if your going to do extended walking or want to wear thicker warmer socks. I have worn them in town in teen below zero F with normal socks for up to half an hour and they are still comfortable. However... I do not understand the love affair with CXL leather by many. I use my brown CXL as a general purpose boot because I have the black for dressier occasions. The CXL leather can be recovered with some work, but it scuffs very easily. So not sure why so many people love it, and not just for AE boots either. What am I missing?

Grouse hunting isn't the first thing I associate with a leather dress boot.

    You really abused those!

Channeling your inner Theodore Roosevelt, eh?

Any thoughts on the Maxfield? I love them, but my 2 pairs ( one two-tone, one light br) are worn out after 4 or 5 rebuilds each and I need to replace them with ???

    Cheers,

Wow, that's insane. How long did each pair last in years? How often did you wear them?

When you click on certain sizes that Amazon is out of, it automatically defaults to Shoebuy or some other third party site. If it defaults to a 3rd party site, Amazon discount codes don't apply. That's the downside of Amazon - they run out of popular sizes quickly.

I have only worn them with shorts so far. But they should be fine with jeans or chinos.

    Interesting.

I'm a freak of nature on the shoe sizing bell curve. (9EEE)

It's probably that Amazon carries very few shoes in my size.
