Sigh . . . we've had this discussion already in a previous thread. The best course is to get your AE's recrafted after each wearing.

I recently had to return a pair of Kenilworths that I had bought at the AE retail store in NYC (44th st). I had actually worn them outside of my house and the customer service rep that I spoke too, Brenda, was kind enough to accept my shoes back and send me a new pair. I was extremely happy because I didn't expect it.. but there was a problem.

The shoes I received don't seem to be the same quality as the ones I had purchased at the retail store. The leather seemed thicker and softer, the grain was more visible. There was a little sticker on the sole of each shoe with small shoe Icons on them (3 of them). The size and information about the shoe is written on the tongue which I found strange considering every other pair I have purchased has had that information on the side of the shoe near the heel counter. There was also a little blue circle sticker on the inside of the box. Last but not least.. probably the most unsettling, was that one of the flaps was warped a little and bubbled up. (which pulls almost unnoticeable and tight when tied)

They fit fine.. and are very comfortable.. but they do not seem to be the same quality that I payed full retail price for.

My question to all of you is wether or not you know anything about the thicker leather/blue sticker/sticker of a shoe icon on the sole and wether or not these shoes are not "First" quality.

I'll post pictures when I can.

    Yes, they are downtown.

The other shoe stores I know of are Mark's Shoe Room in Edmond, but they no longer carry AE, so I haven't been there in a while. There is also Alton's in Edmond - they carry Alden, but not AE. And there is always Shoe Gallery in North Park Mall - they carry some AE, but mostly more affordable brands.

I'm pretty sure I figured out what the sticker on the bottom of my shoe is for. There are tiny arrows pointing to each little icon. One icon is of plain toe.. the other is Blucher.. the last is the sole/heel type.

The Difference in leather quality and blue sticker are still a bit unsettling. This pair does seem very different than the pair I bought at the retail store.

I just received a pair of replacement McTavish (1st quality). I did not find anything physically wrong w/ my pair, however I noticed I had a little blue circle sticker on the inside of my box as well. I wonder what that means.

I have pair of dark brown Dalton boot seconds coming in the mail, I'm hoping that there isn't any major physical blemishes on them.

I think mine might be fine.. it has been about a month since I saw my original Kenilworths. The leather being thicker + softer has to be a good thing now that I think about it. The only imperfection is that the flap on the outside of the right shoe is warped and a little damage, but that might have happened in transit as the one shoe was not in it's nice red satin bag. The grain being more noticeable is just something I would have to live with I think, being that Calfskin is going to have some grain quality to it.

All of that being said, they still seem a little off. Please let me know if you are happy with the seconds you receive and whether or not they have any strange markings on the shoe or in the box.

ya, those do not look like cordovans at all...

almost any shoe can be made in cordovan, however it is the normal price of their cordovan line up, plus another $125 on top of that. i'm not saying that its not possible, but if this seller knew a damn about shoes, i'm sure he would say something in the description about the leather being "Horween" or "genuine shell cordovan"... A lot of people think/reference the term "Cordovan" as a color, which couldn't possibly be more wrong. The typical cordovan color is #8, which is that burgundy color that most shell shoes are... however there is something up with this post.

If you are selling a $600 shoe, i would expect more details. The micro-creasing leads me to belief it is calf, and that horse shit about the 5x as longer sole is just silly...

If it helps.. those shoes look almost identical to my Merlot Calfskin McAllister's. Mine might actually have less creasing in them as the only creases are right over the toes/ball of the foot and the creasing is not very noticeable. My McAllister's were bought off ebay as well from Hitch-N-Post used. They look almost new other than the creasing. These shoes in question seem to be the same color but more creases.

Black shoes go best with black (in my book, it is the only color that goes with black). Depending on your overall ensemble, black may go best with gray. Further, and again, depending on your overall ensemble, black may go best with navy. Having said all of that, I go with other colors (burgundy or browns) more often than I go with black when pairing with gray suits or navy suits, and I generally agree with the post above. But to the extent it is an effort to steer one away from black suits and/or black shoes in general (not saying it is, but certainly hints at it), I must respectfully disagree, perhaps even vehemently so. Depending on one's profession, and the level of formality one is expected to observe in said profession, the idea of staying away from black suits and/or black shoes is unadulterated nonsense, and wouldn't just seem amateurish, it would be amateurish. :nodding:

If one dresses business professional day in and day out - yet has not a single pair of black shoes (or, for that matter, a black suit) - he doesn't just seem confused, he is confused.

When buying black shoes, approach it like any other color, and don't do it on the cheap. And more often than not opt for black shell cordovan (preferably, Alden's black shell) over black calf.

There is zero chance those are shell cordovan. The seller is either a rookie or a liar.

Or he's referring to the color, which is a pretty common thing.

ya thats what i noticed... i will say, they have a nice polish on them, but hey look identical to mine as well

fixed... one of the very very few pet peeves i have are people who refer to the word "cordovan" as a color. it is the type of leather, the color is either burgundy or color #8, for the most part

has allen edmonds changed their laces? i ordered some laces for my aldens (gasp), and instead of the thin, very waxy laces from AE that i've become accustomed to, i received fatter, less tangibly waxy laces.
