I received my burgundy shell MacNeils from the shoe bank today.

Here's the right shoe (straight out of the box) next to my Alden cigar shell longwing, which I'm wearing today, on the the left foot:

Now, for the complete pair. They look to be in good condition, but you will see in the photo below that the quarter panels on the left MacNeil are misaligned by about 1/8 inch. Notice how the bottom lace is not perpendicular to the line of the shoe. I'm curious whether this is a big issue; should I send them back? They otherwise look perfect and they feel okay for the most part, but the left outer topline touches my ankle very slightly...probably due to the quarters being out of alignment. I don't think most people would notice the defect, but if it's likely to cause a comfort issue in the long term then I may try to exchange.

I picked up the Bitter Chocolate Players ( along with the snuff and sand suede) at the 2 for $200 sale ( Paid 3 for $300). I have found the bitter chocolate is actually more versatile colorwise than the snuff suede. I also have a pair of Byron captoes in dark brown suede ( which looks awesome with my POW suit), but the bitter chocolate gets the most wear by far.

    Storm33,

If they are first quality, send them back.
If they are seconds, then its your decision, it should not adversly affect wear, but it may bug you:embar:

    Regards.

Thanks, I'm not sure what leather they use, to be honest. Yeah, they are more expensive retail; but I was able to get a pretty good deal off of ebay so that I didn't have to pay much more than a pair of Mcallisters, which I was originally looking for.

Hey, thanks. I don't do anything special with mine; I just condition (not every time though) and use their walnut polish following the steps they outline on their youtube video. Every other polishing, I'll use Meltonian shoe cream before the polishing step; but that's pretty much it.

+1. It would bother me every time I looked down. But it's very personal and depends on how well you would live with that.

My Bayfields are slightly off like that (they are 2nds). At the end of the day, I paid $200 under retail, so that eases my mind whenever I look down [IMG]

For me the Fifth Street is close enough. I actually prefer the less brogueing that the Fifth Street has.

Earlier this year/late last year they were on clearance for $199 through retail stores. Not sure why this was the case as they are still selling them.

I had the exact same issue of the ones I got a couple of weeks ago. I ordered firsts from my local AE store, so when I tried them on, it was immediately obvious. They sent those back and ordered me a new pair. Hopefully they don't try to sell them as firsts.

I think i am going to pick up a pair last week in August or whenever their yearly sale is... 15-20% off all shoes, so that will bring it down pretty close to the normal price range...

I need a nice black captoe so even though the Rutledge's look amazing in walnut, i'm going with the black.

Thanks for the comparison pic. I was set on getting a pair of Alden Shell LWB, but now looking at the pictures of the two, I don't think I will. I don't like the proportion of gap between the lacing and the wingtip.

Nice shoes, but for shoes like that... i could never. I would return them in a heart beat. Even if you did get a good deal, you still paid a crapload in comparison to 99% of the shoes out there.

On a side note, I love how AE eyelits are close to one another. Even with their bals... such a cleaner look rather than having a 2 inch gap. I have a pair of Cole Haans collecting dust soley because of the fact that the eyelits are spaced way too far apart for my liking.

AE up in boston told me that they have a yearly sale either in August or Sept. I can't remember but they will email me and let me know. I think this is for retail stores only, but call your local AE store and find out. I have no idea if it is available online, however the store on Newbury St. is definitely having it. Most shoes are 15% off, some are up to 20% off.
