I've found that kennilworth runs slightly large. My other shoes in the 5-65 last (pa and fifth ave) fit like a glove in ten D, while the kenilworth is too long. I like the shoe, but the 9.5 is too small. Haven't yet tried a ten narrow or any other combinations like that.

You might want to try an insert or something to take up a little bit of the space tho if you plan to keep them.

I have a pair of shell Sanfords and a pair of calf Sanfords. Both fit identically (and perfectly). I also have a pair of shell Macneils that fit significantly larger overall but somehow cramp my little toe on one foot.

I am not sure comparisons can be easily made.

Re: returning factory seconds to AE store:

Well ... look at it this way... the salesmen work on salary plus commission. They are focused on selling as many new shoes, in store or ordered from their store, as possible. Anything that distracts them from their mission is not going to get a minute of their attention.

BTW I was in the E. 44th St. NYC store on Sunday, bought a pair of Daltons...but in the half hour I was waiting to be helped, the 2 salesmen on the floor moved at least $2.5-3k worth of shoes and accessories, and placed orders for 3 more pairs. It was pretty amazing to watch. One customer bought 4 pairs; another bought 3.

Keep in mind that this is sort of the Golden Triangle of trad menswear, being across the street from Brooks Bros and around the corner from Alden. I got the impression from chatting with the owner that AE's business is booming right now.

I finally crossed the threshold with my first pair(s) of nice shoes. Listening to SF, I'd looked for the Park Avenue...which they didn't have at the first store I went to; instead I went with the Fifth Avenue. Unfortunately, after about 5 minutes of walking in them...I found that for some reason on my right foot the seam managed to hurt the base of my first toe...making them unwearable :(. Luckily, was able to return them.

At a different store in town (that's a primary AE retailer)...got some nice help and wound up getting the Kenilworth in black and brown...same last as the PA/FA but way more comfortable! Am enjoying them now and the break-in actually seems much easier than I expected!

Agreed. My shell and calf MacNeils fit exactly the same.

I also think there is some variability in individual shoes, for some reason. But I've also realized that the shape of a last affects feet differently - i.e.: to me, the MacNeils fit the same, but to a different shaped foot, there may be variation due to the way the leather gives in a certain direction.

I get this. But they need to get their message straight. I have an email from AE clearly stating that I could return seconds to a retail store. Why is it the customer's fault for following directions? I mean, it's not the end of the world to have to mail them back; but they told me it was OK.

My store was very nice about it, and the saleswoman almost sold me a pair of cordovan Strands out of it. So she took advantage of my being there and already being a customer. Good for her. I guess it's up to the individual salesperson as to how they want to treat their customers.

I completely understand the salary/commission+ situation the SAs may be in. I was actually hesitant to go in because I didn't want to waste their time being a "seconds" shopper. I'm also very appreciative that they even let me try on a pair of shoes (firsts) even though they knew I wasn't going to be making a purchase.

I'm just taken back by the fact that I was the only customer in the store at the time and was refused seconds-return assistance. I was not taking them away from a sales, at least not to a physical customer.

It's ok, not that big of deal. I've got what I wanted and it only wasted a few minutes of their time. I contacted shoe bank today and they've already shipped the shoes I wanted (even before I return the ones I have on hand). That's excellent service to me. That's also from a face I've never seen miles and miles away.

My point exactly. I'm glad others had no problem returning seconds to Sutter/San Francisco, but it's unfortunate that I (or anyone else) have the chance of being denied for X reason.

In my experience, no. I am the same size in calf Park Avenues, calf Macneils, cordovan Macneils, cordovan Leeds, cordovan Cambridges, and cordovan strands (also on the 5 last). For some reason the Cambridges feel a little bigger than the Park Avenues and the strands,, but I never considered sizing down. I simply wear my mid-thickness socks rather than my thin dress socks.

The cordovan and calf MacNeils fit the same.

Question: Can anyone provide feedback on their experience with the Sanford? Specifically fit. It is made on the 7 last. Does it seem narrow, wide, or true to width? I don't have wide but I do have flat feet, which makes them "feel" wide in some shoes.

    Any thoughts??

The South Coast Plaza store is excellent. I have received excellent service there, and I don't hesitate to recommend the location. The current manager has been reassigned starting in July I think, but you should still have a good experience.

There is an element of variability to be sure. Some feet may fit well in the same size calf and shell. Some will not. Perceived fit is subjective to some extent. Nonetheless, I maintain that the shell cordovan shoe is going to be slightly bigger than the corresponding calf shoe. It's just that in some cases this may not make a difference relative to the shape of your feet.

Thanks for your input- would any of your 10 pairs be on the 5 last for comparison? Also- was there a significant decrease in width with sizing down .5?

Yeah, I tend to agree with that sentiment. I have gone to the EC location for my past couple of purchases. They seem to be far more patient and helpful there.

I have several pair on the 5 last and 9.5E works well for me in that last. There was no noticeable difference in widths with sizing down. I would have never thought going down a half size would work but I trusted the SA and she order the Neumora for me in several sizes and I got to try them all on and the 1/2 size down fit the best.
