My MTO Strands, dubbed The Gus, after some Reno and a coat of AE Dark Brown Premium Polish:
Did you get them to put "The Gus" on the inside them? That would be pretty cool!
Nice shoes, but I really like the medallion on the Strand.
Ha! I was actually thinking about that as I was polishing them, but no, I didn't.
I dig the medallion on my black BB Strands as a business shoe, but love the clean semi-brogue look of this brown pair.
I like the medallion-less toe, but if anything, it makes more sense to forego the medallion on a black business shoe vs. brown.
I'm complex like that.
I was considering a no medallion Dalton, but I am waiting for my current MTO to come in.
I'm wondering what you guys think is the best sole for wintry harsh weather in perhaps a dressier shoe?
I like the combination tap sole idea, but have the mini lug on my casual Wilberts that have worked well.
I'm also wondering what the longevity of some of those soles are like?
I have the problem that overshoes just really don't come in size 14 (at least that'll fit over good). Thus, I've sort of given up on that idea.
I'd like to hear you guys thoughts on the matter.
Hi guys. Hoping you could help me out with a quick sizing question. I currently have 2 pairs of AE's - Clifton (12EEE) and a custom MacNeil (13D). My Brannock is 13D, I'm a 13D in the C&J 325 and I wear a 12.5D in Barrie. I'm looking to purchase the cordovan Dundee and I'm assuming I would take a 13D - any advise would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
I am loving the look of the black welt breaking up the brown upper and cream sole
Minilug Tap sole is my preference. It is subtle. Similar to the Alden Commando sole. Look at the sole on the AE Ridgeway.
I like that mini lug tap sole! I see the Ridgeway's are on clearance too.
Agreed. The Othello sole on my Wilberts lasted about two years before I had to get it resoled; the inside of the heel is hollow, and it started picking up gravel while I walked. I won't be purchasing any shoe with that sole again. I've an equally old pair of captoe boots with a vibram minilug sole and they're holding up just fine.
The MTO program comes in really handy here, especially for the more offbeat sizes (I'm a 14AA). Any shoe they make, in any leather they make, with any sole they make, for list price with no custom make-up fee... it's done wonders for my collection and utterly annihilated my savings account.
I'm having to make this exact decision for an MTO boot, and I'm going with Dainite because it's completely invisible and has a pretty amazing reputation. Basically, if it's good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for me. To each his own, I guess.
I own both and have to say I am a bit underwhelmed with the mini-lug. It feels thin and almost plastic-y in comparison to Alden's commando sole. The Alden sole is far more substantial
Allison just called. My MTO Burgundy Shell Franciscans are done and shipping today. WooHoo! I will post pics as soon as they come in.
