I have a gap in mine but not like that! That seems to be excessive (IMHO). My gap shows mostly when walking - heel striking etc. Not extremely noticeable when just standing still...

Overall though, my AEs show this so much more than my other shoes.

I've never seen this problem with another maker, so I agree with you.

On the other hand, maybe AE is going after the underserved "cankle" market that Alden targets with their Barrie last.

    Awesome! :slayer:

I need to check my Cliftons and see if they do this. I'm pretty sure my Macneils don't. And I have a pair of RL Sandersons that I'm wondering about, too.

I already have the Jefferson wingtip in walnut and a dark brown Santoni elongated cap toe.
I want to get a black cap toe as my more formal shoe but I find the park avenue too stubby and rounded, any other options I could consider. One other shoe that I liked was this Nordstrom brand Lido , thoughts?

I believe the MacNeil and Leeds fit the same. I'm a 10.5E in the Leeds, same in the Dalton.

They are different lasts. The Leeds and Dalton are the same last though.

That Lido looks nice. Made in Italy means it's likely Blake stitched, not welted like the AEs. I personally prefer welted shoes, but that's just me.

They do fit tighter, about a width size for me.

Any ideas for black captoe good year welted shoe with a more elongated toe.
Not sure why the Park Avenue looks more stubby, I have the Jefferson which is the same 5 last but does not look stubby.

Not sure of your price range, but take a look at Brooks Brothers Peal (made in England by A&S or C&J). There is also the J&M custom select line, which are made in the US (no idea how these are and won't get any love on this forum), and then Aldens. I think all of these are going to run $400-$500. Maybe get another pair of AE Independence collection shoes in black?

IMO, the best are the Peals. If you have time to wait, BB puts them on sale occasionally.

+1 on the BB Peal. I'm waiting on a sale as we speak to pick up a pair of brown punch caps. Also, why not get another Santoni if you like the more elongated toe? Or, get someting from C&J on the 348 last, like the Hallam?

Also, have you tried on the Park Avenues? I have Park Avenues in black and think they look much better on my feet than they do in pictures.

Bear - What other shoes do you own as I plan on moving away from AE due to quality and fit issues?

I own a pair of Strands in Walnut and absolutely love them. I get compliments on them all the time, and they go great with my navy and charcoal suits. I've also worn them with jeans (I am teh crazy) and managed to pull them off just fine. Walnut is a very versatile color. Just be sure you can find a belt that has similar color for matching!

Got my distressed brown MacNeils the other day ($129). I like them so far. They came with tan laces, which I wasn't quite happy with, so I replaced them with what I had on hand-- black laces.

Does the black look alright, or should I really get some brown laces?

My Bayfields, which were backordered, are now on their way!
