    I emailed Allison yesterday morning around 6am asking the same questions you all were discussing yesterday here. Yes she can honor the current sale price on MTOs and still waive the MTO fee. So a custom pair of shells is $505.75.

    I have decided I really like the Franciscan. I saw a guy made a pair of Franciscans in burgundy Independence leather with an Independence sole.

    Allison is checking on the availability of Cappuccino Shell. I am hoping to get a pair especially since I was one that emailed her so early and first yesterday. I want a double thick Independence sole with wheeling. I think that nickel buckle will look awesome on cappuccino shell. What do you all think of this make up idea?

    Mora 2.0 is on 108 last (round toe), which, as far as I'm concerned, is AEs best last by a large margin. Great tapered toe shape. Neumora was on 333 last, which has a chisel toe.

    Nothing wrong with a chisel toe, too. The C&J Lowndes was/is a SF favorite, and in my opinion, the EG Westminster in 808 is the best "standard" double monk over made (yes better than JL Williams).

    299 is already 50% off for cordovan! About as good as it's likely to get.

    I bought some brown shell strands yesterday. Had then shipped to my office in Utah to avoid NY sales tax and my wife's sardonic questioning! ;)

    for reference with future MTOs- is there a list of options that is available? a "Chinese menu" if you will.

    I have noticed there are so many MTOs with different welt colors, dressing colors, liners, soles, leathers,ETC... how do you know all of these are available?

    My local store said the $299 shell sale ended Sunday. I grabbed 2 pair, confident that it didn't get better than this.

    I already own burgundy calf Patriots. Love them.

    I ordered brown cordovan Patriots last week while they were still available as Webgems..

    I am contemplating ordering a third pair of Patriots during this RDA sale. I will be wearing a lot of loafers to the office (biz casual) over the next few months following shoulder surgery.


    Do I get black to pair with wool pants in light gray and charcoal, and also denim. If yes, I would consider springing for cordovan again.

    Do I get burgundy cordovan? ....just because they look great in pictures to me despite the fact that I already own burgundy calf.

    Or do I stand pat since my burgundy calf & brown shell patriots should pair well already with wool / denim / blazers; ie anything I can throw at them.

    Honorable mention to getting a formal loafer like a tassel (Grayson).


    Help me! This is a sickness.

    No. We simply know based on catalogs, website images, and our own shoes. If you see a feature on another shoe, they can probably do it as long as you're not changing the actual cut of the leather upper or the last it is on (ie they wont add punching, or make a park avenue on the 1 last).

    Random thought - does anyone else feel that the endless sales and wide availability of seconds is diminishing AE's brand value?

    I like a deal as much as the next guy, and have taken advantage of both sales and seconds, but I now find that aside from a special order I wouldn't even consider paying full price for an AE shoe. Not that the retail price doesn't represent fair value - I think it clearly does - but I know that next week there will be a whole bunch of new 'special' sales, or else I can find that shoe as a discounted second for half the price or better.

    The end result is that I find that where I used to think of AE as a $350 shoe, I now think of the brand as more of a $150-$200 shoe. Or put in other terms, I am perceving the brand to be "less premium" than I once did.

    And I'm not suggesting that should matter to anyone in an individual sense, but market perception of brand value is far from an irrelevant consideration in the broader context.

    Your thoughts?

    For every one of us who reads this thread and gets that impression, I'd pull a number out of a hat and guess there are dozens more who don't and happily pay full price... but the internet makes this kind of information far easier to find, and those "dozens more" are probably shrinking in number relative to those who know about seconds and sales and the SF MTO plan.

    It's a tricky game they're playing. I'm certain I own more Allen Edmonds shoes now than if I hadn't stumbled across this thread and become seduced by all these shell cordovan photos. Is it enough (for me personally and those here in the aggregate) to make it worth their while to keep offering such discounts to we who are in the know? Probably, or else they wouldn't do it. Their shoes are going up in price what seems like ten bucks a year (handily beating inflation and interest rates) so maybe between that and our collective enthusiasm for their product it all evens out in their books.

    I hope they know what they're doing. The brand and current management seem fantastic -- I'd like to see 'em stick around quite a while longer.

    I can assure you that we are a very small subset of AE's consumer base. I think they are smart to offer those willing to do a little digging substantially better deals than what the general population is aware of. Doing so allows them to move their seconds with ease, thus still making a marginal profit. While not conclusive by any means, personally know at least ten people who have a very fond interest in AE, and often buy them at retail. I've told the ones that I think are willing to do the extra leg work about the outlets and their sales. The others casually browse, and buy when they see fit.

    When I was at my local AE last week my SA showed me a drop down menu on their computer system which allowed them to check off mto options.

    I think it is easy to forget that people who really care about shoes, follow these sale trends, and are active participants in Style Forum represent an extreme minority of people out there. We start to assume that since we rarely pay full price for AE's, that must mean that the rest of the world doesn't either. Not so. AE sells plenty of shoes at full retail price. To me, the brand value starts with what the average joe thinks of shoes and goes up from there. The average joe thinks that cheap, cemented, corrected grain, square toe, slip on black Ecco shoes are among the best, simply because they are all over every department store. They would never consider paying retail price for what we consider "entry level" high-end shoes because they don't realize the quality difference.

    Rather than looking at the sales and seconds as diminishing the brand value, I actually look at it more like a well kept secret. The guy in the next office over who thinks he's wearing nice shoes simply because he paid $250.00 for them at Johnston and Murphy, doesn't realize that he could have gotten even better shoes for less money at Allen Edmonds. If someone asks me, I'll tell them, but I don't try to educate my office on the fact that they can get great shoes for what many pay for crappy shoes. Rather, I just happily walk along enjoying that I look far better than the average joe, while not necessarily spending much more to do it.
