This is the circumference of your feet, measured at the widest point, the ball.

When you go down in size (while keeping the width constant), the length of a shoe decreases. Additionally, all other dimensions decrease, including the ball girth. The widest part of the shoes also moves closer to the heel.

When you go up in width (while keeping the size constant), only the ball girth and width increases. (On combination lasts, the heel width increases, too.)

Are you talking about the brown distressed MacNeils? I am fucking kicking myself for not buying those.

Don't beat yourself up too much. They are nice (especially at the price), but I found my cheaper brown wingtips (along with most of the SF board at the time) more versatile than the distressed brown macneils and ended up returning them.

I came awfully close to buying then, too, and came to the same conclusion. I have other shoes I like better and that are more versatile.

I would only try it with dark/raw jeans.

Questioning the fit of the Fifth Street. I just recieve (via mail order from Allen Edmonds) the Fifth Street in brown. They fit well other than there is a little more than an inch space from my toe to the end of the shoe. The rest of the shoe fits fine. I have the Strand, McAllister, Park Ave, Mora which all fit my 12D foot well. Has anyone had the issue with the Fifth Street?

The fit was never an issue for me. My Fifth Street feels the same way as my old Strand. My QC issues were irregular dye patterns and leather no molded to the last well so it 'bubbled' in a certain area. Maybe since it is a boot it is novel feel for you?

I think this answer is better than any one I can give. Thanks, Claus.

    -Edit-

Oh, I did notice that changing widths on the PA also affected the heel fit. So, I take it that this would qualify as a "combination last". Did I get that right?

My first boot. I would think that it should fit like most of my other shoes other than the extra leather above the angles? I really, really like the boot.

Yep. I jumped on them--My walnut scotch grain MacNeils are my favorite shoes, so I knew they would fit. I wear my walnut shoes to work and save the distressed ones for the weekends. The natural welt and sole give the shoe a more chiseled look than the versions with dark welts. The result is more refined than my moc-toe filson shoes that are my usual weekend wear. Looks great with jeans (dark raw or faded), chinos, etc... I could probably even wear them with no socks this summer, but that might be pushing it...

I'm glad they were out of my size when they put the navy MacNeils on sale...

3+ years of steady wear? Wow, how did you prevent creases from forming so well!?
