I have a pair of black shell macneils. I have had them for a few months now. After a lot of treatment and brushing they have a very nice deep luster. They look way better than any black calf shoes I have. While I am sure they do not patina as well as various brown shells, they certainly are a good shoe to have in your rotation.

I liken it to a black jellybean or a black clear coated car. It is black in color, but the color is in a layer below the surface - the surface is just clear, which makes for a neat effect on shoes. Once you get past the "spewing" stage, they are very easy to care for. Plus, you get shell rolls rather than micro creases.

Examples: Black shell Cambridge - brand new, never even been brushed, Black shell Park Ave, about 4 months old, Black shell Leeds = 2 years old, black calf Grayson = 3 years old, but hardly ever worn - probably 4 times per year (seriously)

Pics like these makes me want to get a Cambridge , I bought a pair of Maccallisters from the Nordstrom AE and returned them because I found them too pointy for my taste , don't know if it was a bad pair or what but all the pics I've seen of PA,Cambridge,Maccallisters have a more rounded toebox.

This are the Maccallisters I returned , don't they look different ?more pointy,or is it me?[IMG]

Those look good to me, but I can see a difference when compared against the Cambridge above. I'd say your foot may just be longer and/or narrower than the other pictures.

The Cambridge has a double sole? That might be the difference.

Mine are 9.5EE so not narrow.

    Thanks.

Can you guys recommend a sleek AE shortwing? Blucher style. No Bals.

I don't think I've seen anything in the current lineup, but something fairly recent would also work.

New Macallister and Cambridge, side by side.

I'm going to return the Macallisters, though; I ordered them before the current shell sale.

Does MTO Allison have an email address?

I'm considering selling my Daltons (which I've worn maybe 2 times in a year) to fund a shell MacNeil creation.

If you ask me, black shell looks cleaner. I mean, you put all the work into creating a high shine on your black shoes but what you can't get rid of are the nasty wrinkles in the leather. When the light shines upon them, you can see the wrinkles and they reflect light a bit differently than a smooth black calf. With shell, the bends in the leather are smooth and unless you are very up close, it looks as it the shoe is still pristine.

Very well said about a shoe being an improper size, and people's issue with a shoe creasing.

Proper fit is important, but to think that someone would buy a shoe solely o nlooks and where it creases, and ignoring the long-term fit in relation to ones foot is asanine.

And with AE seconds, I am of the opinion that people should know their size in the shoe on any given last and obtain a second if it is available and if they are wiling to deal with minor imperfections.

95% of the 2nds I have seen are nearly flawless, every once in a while you may get a bad apple, but you know what, first time you wear it out in the rain, or snow, or drop something on it, it's a backup shoe...dont stary crying, Nancy.

Take care of them, and they'll take care of you.

    Thanks for the great post!

Love allen edmonds, ad anything else not made by cheap labor somewhere offshore!! just found out that The $199 calf and $299 shell 2nds sale is over , but for your reference, shell fits a little bigger all the way around, if these fit a little long and snug, you may want to try the same size in cordovan (although it's even more rare to find a 2E in shell anything)

    Perhaps try 9 or 9.5 3E
