Finally got my first two AE pairs. Several posts back, I was asking for suggestions on which first two pairs to get (to be worn regularly with suits). I ended up getting the black Park Avenue and Strand in burnished dark brown. Had a hard time deciding on the Park Avenues, but was instantly sold on the Strands.

Interestingly, I was originally set on getting them with the V-tread tap soles. However, when I tried on the Park Avenues (which came with the tap soles), the fit was a bit off -- esp. the left shoe. When I tried another pair with the regular leather soles, they fit perfectly. So decided to just get both pairs with leather soles. The SA told me that it's possible that the tap soles slightly changed the shape of the shoes. I think it's also possible that I just tried on a "bad" pair.

Anyway, I know these pairs are not that exciting, but here they are:

Here's to the first of many. Excellent shoes & good choices! ps: consider bar-lacing at least the Park Avenues. It looks really clean.

Thanks! I agree about the bar-lacing. Will try that later.

And yes, thinking of getting a couple more pairs for more casual occasions. [IMG]

I never get tired of seeing the classics. Great pickup. I'm in dire need of a black pair but I just can't seem to convince myself to get the PA. Fifth Ave is probably what I'll end up getting.

Excellent choices for your first two pairs of AE shoes. I only own two pairs of AEs as well, almost the same ones you have: black Park Avenues, brown burnished Fifth Avenues. Great minds... And +1 to the straight bar lacing comment above. My preferred method is straight European lacing, as seen here: http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straighteuropeanlacing.htm

Great first purchase, having tap soles shouldn't affect the fit of the shoes at all, so you probably just tried on a "bad" pair. yeah, I would suggest bar or straight European lacing for all dress shoes.

I was on the fence between these two as well. In the end, I decided to go with the Park Avenues. After trying the 5th avenues in both black and dark brown, I think I prefer the 5th ave in dark brown.

Yeah, that could be it. I guess I also wasn't really sure if I wanted the tap soles for the PAs. So when the fit of the leather soles came out better, I just went with it.

    They're both 11 D.

Hi everyone - new to this forum but I'm going on because I want to find some ideas for a gift for my boyfriend. We just had our anniversary and his birthday is coming up soon!

I know he is a fan of Allen Edmonds - I think he has one with the wingtips!

I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions for his next shoe? I think he should go for a brown - he'll be wearing it to work in quite a conservative environment so I think maybe a darker brown. I think a bit of design would look good too and maybe something sleek!

How about the RL Sanderson in Dark Brown? You can get those from the ShoeBank quite often for ~$159.

    http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4325812

    These are normally $525.

If those are too "formal" then a nice pair of the Kenwood penny loafers might be a great fit. Those can be had for approximately the same price at the ShoeBank.

I know you're probably wondering what the ShoeBank is. Well, it's AE's outlet and you can find 2nds for amazing prices. Usually the blemish isn't noticeable at all...it's never been on mine.

I'd feel 100% confident giving a gift of shoes from any ShoeBank or AE Outlet.
