    Hey Steve, welcome!
The former military part of me wants to tell you "Elbow grease!" But I agree, I've found it difficult to get that mirror shine on my PA's. That said, with time, and the right product (saphir), it's doable. This thread fills up quick, but someone just posted a great pic a day or two ago of a fantastic shine he had on his PA's.

There's an entire shoe care thread here on SF as well that should be helpful. But if you don't want to dig through that the Shoe Snob has a good blog and he covers shining as well. Good Luck

I e-mailed the store to ask about the re-soling, the person I spoke to should be able to give me a better idea.

I have purchased three pairs of AE shoes from Nordstrom brick and mortar shoe shop. They have never offered me a shoe shine. I find this information very disturbing. It's as though Nordstrom is discriminating against me. I don't think can shop there any more.

I also like bacon. A lot.

I tried to order the last pair of burgundy nathans in 10.5 but they were gone.

The Jos A Bank models are a total steal at seconds pricing. The Nathan was $129, I remember they were offering the boardroom at the same price for the memorial sale, I believe.

Yes, the AE shines are usually a Matte Finish. The above Long Branch Boots I just purchased were a Matte finish out of the box. Before wearing, a light brushing was applied to the boot, followed by an application of a mink oil based cream polish in matched color, another light brushing, followed by a wax based polish, more light brushing, and then some balm.

Like you, I prefer not the mirror shine (or spit shine), but using cream and wax generally gets me where I want to go. More wax and shining could have been added, but I chose to keep it like the photo shoes.

By the way, the shine above was a free shine at a Nordstorm department store where each of their professionals have decades of experience.

Some other great web sites are SID MASHBURN and HANGER PROJECT and A SHINE & CO .

I thought that might be the case... Thanks for clearing that up for me.

David, you push this, but I think fair to note that this varies by shop. I went to a Nordstroms recently where they had this poor sap with exactly 1 day of experience out shining shoes. Sure, it was $2.50, and its not his fault necessarily, but the service was certainly not "professional."

I stand corrected, and thanks for the post.

Yes, there may very well be a different level of professionalism between the department store shoe stands for $2.50. For me, my experience has been outstanding at the following:

South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa/Newport Beach

    Salt Lake City

    Spokane

    Seattle headquarters.

Thanks guys! It's nice to see that a common, non-shell/MTO shoe still gets so much love.

To pat myself on the back, I think I made an excellent choice for my first Allen Edmonds shoe with the merlot Mcallister. Every time I got up from my desk today I found myself watching my feet as I walk and thinking "Wow, what a gorgeous shoe".

My second pair of shoes (well 4th because I have some MLB boat soes), the Strand in walnut will be here tomorrow and I'm even more excited now that I'm hooked on Allen Edmonds and know what to expect.

From there I don't know what my next pair will be, but I am spending 4 days in Chicago next weekend (I'm from Toronto Canada), so I'll have many opportunities to see other styles first hand. I think a Neumok is needed, but I'd rather see it in person first.

You have all drained my bank account, but I thank you for significantly improving my image and self-esteem.

Looks like we both got hooked at the same time, third and fourth pair are enroute and I've already planned the fifth, sixth and seventh. Damn these sales I feel like I'm stealing candy from a baby (and can't resist).
