Agree with BackInTheJox, $260 and $130 are night and day. I think the BB edition AE seconds are usually floating around the $200 point when they usually goes on sale and that is still a marked difference.

Still better than the $525 retail price though.

Do the Ralph Lauren shoes use the regular leather insole?

True, but the fact that they were being sold at $130 was what the hoopla was all about.

I don't recall exactly if they use just the regular insole, but I vaguely recall someone saying that it might be slightly different.

Yes, it is a leather insole, but not the regular insole that AE uses. A little hard to describe. It is softer (minimally padded) but nowhere near as thick as the BB poron insole.

    True, this sale was epic.

I had a thought. I'm wondering about how people on this thread were introduced to AE shoes, what their first pair was, and how many they have now.

My story is that I bought my first pair of AE off the old sales threads on StyleForum. They are the brown Clintons that I still have. They were brand new, and I think cost me around $100.

I had been a J&M person before then, and I'd unfortunately followed them through their transformation from quality made-in-the-US Goodyear welted shoes to imported glued shoes.

AE got me back on the wagon. I now have 11 pairs, I think:
    3 pair AE US Made
    5 pair AE Italian made
    1 pair AE for RL
    1 pair AE for Wolverine
1 pair AE for Rag & Bone

For me, while I like AE, it has also been a gateway to other brands, mostly British (and mostly more expensive). That's why I'm guessing my collection is not as large as a lot of other people here.

I just ordered my first pair of Allen Edmonds: The Long Branch in Brown Waxy Leather. I ordered them from my local Harry Rosen, where my SA told me they're back ordered, at least to Canada. I'm settling in to endure the undoubtedly painful 4-6 week wait.

Shoecare/polish question - Regarding Kenilworth Burnished Walnut (or any burnishing in general)

Are there special instructions to polish the burnished area? AE said to just apply their walnut premium polish as if they were regular full walnut calf. I'm worried about the polish covering up the burnishing. Tips?

I heard about 'em on Styleforum not long after I joined. Four years ago I decided to see what the fuss was about, so I picked up the phone and called Shoebank.

A dark brown pair of Byrons was my first, and they're still my go-to shoe for any occasion spiffy enough for closed lacing but not so formal as to require black shoes. I'm now up to six pair; it's tricky to justify much more when most of my more-casual-than-business-casual office wears jeans and sneakers.

I fuckin hate Harry Rosen. Apart from being overpriced, they're almost always very snooty.

with a cotton swab you could put put a tiny tiny bit of polish on the the burnished area, and carefully work it in, but even at that point it is excessive and not really necessary. The toe on my Neumora's are burnished, and while some suggest doing a tiny bit of black on the toe, normal brown is completely fine for me. I guess at this point it depends how dramatic the burnishing... on the Neumora, its pretty much dark brown and the toe is a dark dark brown, negligible IMO

Generally speaking, I don't disagree. I've worked with the same guy for quite a few years now, though, and he's great. With shipping costs to Canada and the very real chance of duty fees, I'm actually saving money ordering there, versus the AE website.

Do you mean a tiny tiny bit of black polish? or the walnut one? Thanks.

I stumbled upon AE, when I was looking for a cheaper alternative to my first welted shoe, C&J Drummonds.

My first AE shoe I received in November 2011. I am up to now 9.
