As funny as that is, it feels like hubris for me to call them that.




I spent the last few years of HS at a boarding school in the northern Philly burbs during the late 80s. Princeton Day School was one of our rivals and I had to play against them in football, basketball, and baseball. Driving towards the PDS campus area was a surreal Pleasantville experience with everybody looking like they'd stepped out of a LL Bean/Eddie Bauer/Lands End/JCrew photo shoot. It was like someone opened a catalog, dumped water on it, and they all came to life and multiplied like Gremlins. Same coats, same backpacks, same Bean boots. It was the weirdest thing in the world. I didn't get that same feeling against some of the other schools we played (Shipley, Jenkintown, George School, St. Andrews, Westtown, Friends Central, Hun School, etc.).

Thinking about that experience led me to go check out the local LL Bean. I ended up picking up a denim shirt. More importantly, I ended up wearing my OG brown CXL Higgins Mill boots in their special "extra wrinkly" make up and in need of some conditioning.

Also, I noticed about a week ago that we'd passed up the Alden group in posts. Last year, we didn't pass them until right around the end of June. Passing them in the middle of January as opposed to the middle of the year feels like the Styleforum world is getting back into balance. Congrats on your loquaciousness all you filthy barnweasels!

Well Donkey, now you’ve gone and done it…
I graduated from Princeton Day School in ‘83.
However, I was a “farm hick” from outside of town so I never did quite fit into the Princeton mold.
Probably the biggest impact that going to PDS had on me was getting classically trained in making Nakashima furniture.

So this post left me guessing about which boarding school in the Philly burbs you went to. I was going to guess George School but you eliminated that as a possibility. Hill School in Pottstown?
My son went to Westtown School, albeit a decade later in the 90s.

Building out my new closet. I underestimated how many shelves I need for boots. Once the rest of the shelves are in, They will be immediately full. On the bright side, I’ll have capacity for 17 more pairs of shoes still. I’m thinking of reducing the show capacity by 5 to see if I can get more boot capacity somehow.



This doesn’t include two pairs ordered, but not yet arrived, and a few pairs of athletic shoes and snow boots.

On another note how do you all package your shoes for sale? I was thinking of getting some sort of heavy duty paper and just wrapping the box.

I have about 5 pairs I want to sell and free up some storage space.

I usually try to save a few of the nicer boxes when I get new shoes. Grant Stone and most Alden retailers use nice shipping boxes. Otherwise if I ship just the shoes, the USPS offer nice Priority Mail "shoe boxes".

I don’t think this has been mentioned in past threads, at least my search didn’t turn anything up…thought those on this thread might be interested. Apologies if it’s redundant.

Since I was a kid (or teen, at least) there has been a double sided, internally lit AE billboard here in Milwaukee (about 45 miles south of AE’s Port Washington HQ). Until I knew what AE was, I always thought “why are those boring shoes worth a billboard?”

In the last year or so, it’s come down, in stages. Not sure why. It’s a conspicuous absence, though, since it’s been there more or less unchanged for decades.

Is there a new sign coming for the 100th anniversary? Did the building’s owner (not AE, it’s an insulation producer) raise the rent? Cost cutting, or just reconsidering the value?

Whatever it is, I’m sure it was one of a kind and it’s odd as a local to not see it there anymore. See below for before and after photos.

What season do you wear the scanner/printer in?

AE shoe boxes used to fit in this. I am not sure if the USPS locations will have them, but you can order for free online.

ALWAYS double box! It doesn't cost you anything else as others have pointed out, getting free USPS shipping boxes can be ordered online or picked up at the post office. Plus, the buyer will be happy that their box arrived undamaged and not covered in packing tape. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that show how you can take USPS boxes and modify them so that they fit the shape of a shoe box. I do it all the time whenever I sell sneakers on StockX.
