My vintage Chesters from 1988 have a 1903 code in them. I believe that indicates the 3 last?
Correct, also called the 73 last. It had the largest girth for high vamps of all AE lasts at that time.

The 73 last came in the following sizes.

For anyone looking for new, in-box, vintage AEs, I would recommend seller abenne37 on Poshmark.

He has dozens of old stock in very clever models, in a variety of sizes:

He does have a really impressive collection for sale (many in my size). Most of the ones in my size are polished cobbler, so that's why I haven't been more interested.

Is there an easy way to identify polished cobbler?

If it's new, it's very shiny and it will usually have a much more consistent color all across the shoe. Calf and shell will have more variation within the color. If it is used, polished cobbler will often have more obvious creases.
