All my new shoes get a renovateur and then cream and wax polish application. They look better. They're protected against scuffs. And the renovateur really does lessen the chance of a bloodletting during break in.

I think it depends on how new they are. A month old from AE? Probably doesn't need it. A returned Chester that someone kept in their closet for 15 years unworn and then gets bought by @Shoenut, that probably needs some conditioner.

I bought some new old stock Pedwin suede chukkas that were about 50 years old. No conditioner was required.
