In terms of shoe lacing, my general practice is:

Chukkas and other low-eyelet styles: criss-cross. You can't really get too fancy with them.

Oxfords: straight lacing.

Derbys and bluchers: diagonal lacing.

Boots: spiderweb lacing.

The shoes on the left (mine) are Hanover PTB with diagonal lacing, whereas Kevin's AE spectators are criss-crossed:



Here my Bradley's are also diagonal laced.



I feel that derbys/bluchers don't look as good straight laced. The straight lacing accentuates the nice closure of an oxford, but it looks cool to have them slanted on derbys, at least with many eyelets.

Got it, diagonal appears to be a variation on what most people consider "standard" crisscross.

The variation is that the "over" part is always diagonally oriented, so that you only see the top lace going in one direction.
