I think you could wear patriots and shorts, no problem. I actually have the opposite question, which is whether the the rancourt pinch penny has a similarly round toe to the patriot, or is it a little more pointy.
This is an intersting comparison. I never tried the Rancourt's pinch penny but like I'm sure you've heard me say before, I have endless experience with the 114 last from AE plus I own the Quoddy sport penny. The penny is what i would describe as about as "average" fitting as possible - true to size in length & width, completely average heelcup, standard vamp. The Patriot is definitely a "fitted" last - it's super tapered in the heelcup and the toebox is abnormally full. At least imo, the Patriot is one of those rare platforms that lends itself well to both sort of dressy-casual as well as casual-casual while the penny would definitely fall into the "all-casual."

Thanks for the input, you are a trove of AE knowledge. Where would you start sizing the Patriots if you took the Cavanaugh TTS and the 511 down a length, up a width?

I'm glad you jumped into this one! I am pretty sure that the rancourt 114 is the same as AE. Just in the interest of triangulating... I have the kenwood on the 800 last. How does that last compare? For me, aesthetically I'd prefer a toe shape in between the 800 & 606. Both fit me fine in the same size although I prefer the heel of the Patriot (606).

Mainly just trying to figure the how the 114 looks relative to the two that I am familiar with already.

I saw that Kenwood and its damn nice btw.

The 114 is going to be heavily dependent on your instep most likely. If you have a low instep, or high instep, my guess that the 114 will feel more snug overall, while if instep was never an issue, my guess is you may not even be able to distinguish between the 800 & 114 at all - they are very very similar.

The important factor to me was the makeup - I have no problem with the 114 in suede, soft pebble grain, unlined or cxl but I just couldn't handle standard calf. Similar with the 800 although if I absolutely had to I could probably handle standard calf on that last.

Same as the Cavanaugh to start.

Thanks! I have two pairs of kenwoods actually. I picked up a shell pair last year and recently found a really nice grain pair for a steal, which is what I am guessing you are thinking of since I posted them recently.

I have a high instep so it sounds like I will need to be a little careful with the 114. Thanks for your input, sir!

Thank you for the heads up! I am tempted to order a loafer, but given my sizing issues and the fact that the last pair of loafers I tried ground my feet into hamburger should probably refrain.
Let's unpack that, lol. Do you need help with sizing? Have a store near you? If you don't, I can try to help you with a remote fit session.

Cross post from Alden thread.

A newly retired resident of PA,
explained to his wife the value of Scotch grain.
She said "you have closets of shell,
suede, calf and Alpine as well,
and this obsession with shoes is making me insane.

Happy Friday
