How symmetrical should new heels be?
(I am not going to disclose if this is an Alden, Allen Edmonds, or another shoe brand and I only posted in AE because, as a newbie, it seems more people frequent here, will see this post, and possibly respond.)

I was looking over a new pair of shoes and while I am not a perfectionist, I do like things to be nice and tidy especially when they are new so my questions are:
  • How symmetrical do heel stacks (heel and toplift) need to be?
I understand these are "mostly" handmade but the ones shown below are not the same size and one is 1/3 of an inch longer front to back than the other one.

  • If they are not symmetrical will that cause an issue with walking or other possible injury to the person wearing them?

  • What is a fair amount of variance in what is mostly a handmade item?
The reason I ask is that a pair of my wife's low-heel motorcycle style GYW boots just came back from a well-known cobbler after getting new leather soles, new leather heel stack, new rubber toplift, and new rubber sole protectors stitched-on and the heel stacks are basically identical.

Again, not trying to bash any company but rather looking for what is an acceptable variance and what may cause physical harm to the wearer after long term (or short term) use if not constructed correctly.

I traced while on a flat service and one is one obviously wider and also about 1/3 inch longer front to back.

It happens on occasion, especially if they were quickly made. I have at least one pair of trunk shoes like that. Shouldn't affect anything, unless it specifically bothers you when you walk. It shouldn't much since you land with the back of your heel and roll forward. When you push off the front edge will leave last, so that is when you might feel it. As you wear them, the leading edge of the heel will wear down to feel the same on both if there's a slight difference. Or, you could even shave a chamfer on that leading edge to make the actual on ground length the same if it really bothers you. As far as one heel being wider than the next, I'm sure you've seen this all around the welt on various pairs. Again, if it really bothers you, take a dremel to it and sand it down a bit.
I'd be more bothered by the heels not sitting flat than slightly different sized, if I'm honest. Even that will fix itself with time as above.

Celebrating Wingtip Wednesday with Horween English Tan Dublin Leather McGillicuddys.

For fans of "A-E In The Wild" pictures, went to the most logical place to vote, the Nimoy Studio at the Hammer Museum in Westwood Village this morning and voted.

The was no line. There were plenty of machines and only one of them was broken.

For fans of food pictures in shoe threads, after voting went to The Pain Quotient and had a pumpkin spice cookie. Although I seldom include food reviews in shoe threads, didn't think the pumpkin spice cookie was very good.

I love your look of continuous dissatisfaction. You remind me of the dread of my meaningless existence that I vainly fight with my love of shoes.

Love that color combo! I got a pair of Army/Olive Green pants that I like, but don't know what color shirt goes with it besides navy blue. What do you recommend?

In addition to what others have said, pale yellow shirts look great with olive green trousers.
