Common or not, this seems a bit extreme to me; I've got a half dozen all-day wears on my Hopkinsons and they've got a little creasing at the edge of the cap, but they don't have anywhere near this level of deformation:

Talking to myself again...

This may add credence to claims that the Independence line has been sliding in terms of quality over the last couple of years; I got my pair on the popular auction site from a guy who'd bought them, tried them on, and let them sit in his closet for a couple of years before selling them off; I'm assuming that @frosejr's pair is of more recent vintage, having just been bought from the warehouse sale on AE.

Too bad, if true; the leather used for these, inside and out, is much nicer than other legacy models I have, as is the fit and finish.

The first run had the “vintage” logo too—a nice touch IMO

The quality on the Indy line has definitely changed since their original introduction in 2011/2012. However, I'm not sure that the creasing past the cap toe is a sign of poor quality. I've had it happen on C&J shoes. It is something I want to avoid, but I really have little control if it does happen. The Hopkinson will be more vulnerable to it because the cap is longer than the Park.

Re the Independence line and quality, I am certainly no expert but in my view the finest two shoes I own - and I have several C&J's - would be a GMTO Bonafe stitchcap that is handwelted and a Jefferson 1.0 in dark brown. Very different aesthetics and leathers but the overall look and feel of both is a notch above the other shoes and boots I own. The original Indy line was a well conceived and (mostly) well executed idea.

My pairs of Bonafe's are the best, then Buday, with most of my C&J pairs coming in third (all but 1 are shell), then my Indy pairs, followed by Alden, then remaining AEs. That isn't to say I don't like all of them though.

Olive finally arrived after sitting around DFW for a week and a half.
To be blunt, this should be the standard quality from AE. ESPECIALLY when we're paying full price from a trunk show.

Can one of you fine gentlemen assist me with dating this pair of shell macneils (even approximately)? Just got these in... @lcdx22 they seem to fit although I only slipped them on lace-less since I tend to proceed cautiously with shell of uncertain age/care. Thanks again for your assistance earlier.

Apologies for the lousy pics. Only had a brief moment of downtime but will clean these up for better pics later.

Those look quite nice. I'm debating getting a pair as well. Or maybe a pair of bartletts to dye immediately? Or nothing -- which is likely since I can't seem to make up my mind if I really want them when I have green shell strands.
