Hardly walking for wingtip pseudo-walnut Wednesday

I don't have the stability to bend over and take decent shoe pictures - what a weird thing to say

I hope you got those at seconds pricing as I've never seen a pair quite that mismatched. You're really pulling off the look, though!

I've had these for almost a month and haven't gotten a chance to post!

Picked up another one run unicorn that's never been made before; I was told the model was actually pitched by Alden themselves.

Beautiful whiskey shell on Leydon with my favorite foxing on the heel. First photo with flash and the rest without. The indoor nighttime photos don't do them justice. Spectacular.

AE please bring back natural shell!!

Some more experienced may have a better explanation than I... but that said:

Whiskey - (Alden's special color) is very light, almost honey colored. Akin to AE's lighter colors.

Walnut - Darker than Natty or Whiskey. Similar to Bourbon shell, but darker. Maybe some orange/brown tones on older pairs. See my old pair of Walnut shell Dalton (the ultimate grail), photo below.

Bourbon - AE special, very light like Natty or Whiskey but still a hair darker than either of these two. Very close to a "natural" shell color.

Natural - AE special, almost has an orange tone to it in the pairs I've come across. AE's lightest shade and one of the most rare.

Honestly, Natty and Whiskey are probably the two closest and most comparable shades between AE & Alden. Basically the lightest, most pure shells get the treatment of being turned into grail pairs of shoes.

Used to think those were a bit goofy, but they're growing on me for a smart casual! What is the insole made of? The leather looks very substantial and nice. Do you tree them after use like a dress shoe?

The great thing about such light shell, if I understand correctly, is that unlike calfskin it won't get darker with age.
Grant Stone is doing a limited pre-order right now for Horween "honey glazed shell cordovan" which seems to fit your description of Alden whiskey shell. Worth jumping on, IMO.

For anyone who finds himself with an unwanted oil/grease spot on his leather footwear and doesn't wish to spend $25 on boutique cleaning products, I found a great solution.

First I dabbed talcum (baby) powder on the two spots and left it overnight, but sadly, the spots were still there to greet me at 6:30 this morning. An ex-military guy I work with messaged me back last night to advise I blot the spot(s) with a damp q-tip, and then sprinkle baking soda over the area; leave it for 12 hours. As I was instructed, I sprinkled on some Bob's™Red Mill® baking soda this morning, and...voilà! I got home from work just now, brushed off the baking soda, and the unsightly spots are gone!

The end.

Light shell does darken with age and dark shell lightens with age. On a long enough timeline and with enough wears, most shell colors (at least browns and tans) will eventually approach roughly the same medium brown shade. Of course, that would likely take a looooong time.

Would such browned shell be able to be restripped to a lighter color?

Maiden voyage today for wingtip Wednesday. Grant Stone in bourbon suede. They definitely fit the profile of gunboat!

I'd say calf changes color less than shell. Take a look at well worn examples of Natural and Whiskey...they get darker. Here's a quick sample I found of well worn Whiskey:

Not sure, but I doubt it would look anything like it did new. Haven't really seen many refinishing examples on lighter shell.
Right? That's something none of us will ever experience! I think most guys are happy with the golden-orange color it changes to.

A while back, I was surprised to see some of the other thread member’s Sullivan Streets had such strong creasing. My pair is from an early 2017 run and have held up quite well. Hope to see these back in AE’s line up one day.
