The C&J is only an option if they fit you, which they don't me. :p

Understood. And I mentioned that AE offers a larger range of widths.

My larger point is that at $430-ish for suede, AE is facing a different sort of competition than existed during the shell TS’s when AE shell was not only different but cheaper than shell from other makers.

Good choices. I'd really like to get something that's versatile but slightly more in the direction dress casual. I'm pondering a sand Randolph.
Thanks, and yes, I was thinking dress casual, hence why even with shorts might work. Good luck in making your choice!
a Carlyle with shorts? This means war!

Lol. Did not mean to offend. :)

You know, back in 2015 and 2016, there was a linen Carlyle that Brooks Brothers had made for them. Anyone remember this? You could wear this with shorts. I was interested in this shoe, but ultimately decided I would never wear it.

I remember that one. Great looking but per BB’s practice, I think it was only available in “D.”

It was D width only. I wanted them but wasn’t available in 9E. Awesome looking pair.

As Ashley pointed out, yes, it is Stead, but ti isn't full grain. Rather, it is Repello, which I'm pretty sure is split.

The question of whether people who gladly pay MSRP for AE shell would do so for suede is an interesting one. AE has cultivated a "wait until it is on sale" midset among many, intentionally or not. The base price for Dundee, Macneil, and at least one other model is $395. Assuming 10% sales tax, that's puts you at about $435.

If you order from certain authorized dealers in the UK, you can get a C&J suede Chiltern chukka in three days for $436, but only in snuff, dark brown, and earth green.

So even at full retail, AE gets points for some unusual colors, a wide range of widths, and (for some) the attraction of ordering discontinued models vs. european competitors.

It will be interesting to see how this TS plays out.

Reasonable point. FWIW, Carmina is in the same range. About 475 for suede with no sales tax unless you are in NY. To get a fully customized makeup, however you'd have to wait for one of the mto fee waiver events. What mainly distinguishes AE, i think, is the same thing that has always been a differentiator, wide range of sizes and a big retail presence for fitment.

How would the Dundee look in Burgundy suede?

If I was going to do a Burgundy shoe in the TS--I'm not--it would be the Dundee.

While I'm positive guys will post pics in a couple months of nice looking burgundy suede shoes, I'm also pretty sure I'd have a tough time wearing anything in that material. Probably just my lack of imagination. To get me on the burgundy suede train it would have to be a darker, and browner, color than this particular iteration.

No name inside, MacNeils from ebay in morning not yet sun.

Wow, top photo looks like snuff, bottom like choco. Both good colors for the Mac.

The next time I have pens to go to New York, I’ll get fitted. Until then, it’s AE.

MD chukka is unusually narrow.
maybe it’s so soft without the structure that it lasts right
