You might remember that Rancourt is having a pre-sale on a couple of boots in various CXL and suede options. The camel suede Byron has my attention.

I just received a pair of Rancourt Byron boots today, in case you’re interested in seeing them “in the wild.”

I contacted Rancourt about making these in that spruce kudu that I had recently seen on another boot (non-Rancourt). They purchase kudu and checked into it for me. It turned out that due to minimum order quantities and shipping costs, they weren’t going to be able to order it for one pair. They didn’t give up so quickly though. They checked their inventory of leather samples and found a piece of spruce kudu that was large enough to make me a pair. Three weeks later and these are at my door.

These came with two sets of laces, two boot bags, a shoe horn, and a set of coasters (which I assume were cut from the little bit left from their sample).
How awesome is that?

How do you find the fit of the Byron, vs an AE boot in the same size on the 511?

You won’t have trouble. I had two problems overall. The first was a Reda merino wool shirt that tore at a button hole. They allowed me to buy another free (chose another color because it was discontinued)—a $175 credit basically—and then I had a tailor sew the hole in a way that didn’t look terrible—for $3. Another time, a shirt was shrunk way past the normal allowance on two washes. I never wore it. They took it back and refunded without any pressure from me.

@marker2037

+1 for PC everyday, the one brand I wear more often than AE.

The fit is similar to what you would expect from an AE 511. I forgot to mention, but they also did special sizing for me with a 13D on the left and a 13B on the right. And no, it doesn’t look weird. When I’m looking at them on my feet, they look the same.

Macneils in brown pebble grain.

Those are fantastic. Bring 'm back, AE!

I was in my local AE last week to take in some shell Strands that seem to have a broken shank, and was wearing my grain MacNeil 2.0s. The SA helping me said, “Those are gorgeous (a polite salesmanly overstatement. —Ed.)!! Who makes them?”

“Nobody. Now.

This is the second time I’ve worn those when going into that store and had the same reaction and question both times. SMH.

Hello Men--

Men, what do we know about the 2-tone linen/brown Strawfut model...? I found a pair in 3-wear condition for $100, and after a few minutes of google work, I discovered these to have been crafted on the 65 last. The 65 is a bit of a weirdie for me, in that I wear the Strand and the McAllister in an E width, yet my Shreveport fit me perfectly in a D width. The Strawfut in question are a D. I just pulled the trigger on them (hiding them from my wife is another matter entirely; at 13 pairs of AE, she thinks I have a mild hoarding disorder, and I will have them delivered to my work) and I am hoping the D width will work, but I suppose the $100 isn't too big of a gamble and in their pristine condition they wouldn't be too hard to flip if they end up too snug.

How long ago were these discontinued...? It looks like they were a 1940s/50s shoe for AE that was reintroduced briefly. Any first-hand accounts on fitment?

I have a more hardcore form of your disorder. Got rid of my tracking because it only shows acquisitions. I only have 52 pairs on hand.

Nice find! I have the brown/blue version and it fits exactly like a Strand.

They do good work, and every pair I have purchased direct from Rancourt has come with 2 bags, extra laces, shoe horn and some coasters. Class act!

I have a pair, they were made around 2009 or so, as a reproduction of a 1940's AE model. It was a model commissioned by the folks at Fedora Lounge. Mine are size 9D, fit is about same as a PA, mine REALLY have only 3 wears, and are still listed on the AE B/S/T thread and I would sell them for $125 as they have almost no wear on the sole (if I remember, they are currently in their bags on top shelf of the closet)
