I’d like some advice/opinions. My shell Macneils (2nds) came in today and I’m a little concerned with the fit. If the laces are closing this much already, will it likely be an issue with them being too loose down the road?

My other AEs are 11.5e on the 65 last and fit snug. I also have 12e Dalton’s that are roomier but I like boots to fit that way.

These eyelets also look pretty crooked which I’m guessing is what made these go to the outlet.
Size?

12e, can’t believe I forgot that haha.
Personally, I would try 12D or 11.5E. I split the D/E width and find D fits better in shell than E which I typically wear in calf. You could also possibly try an insole insert.

BTW, the slanted laces (misaligned eyelets) look worse when the eye-stays are that close.

I agree, either of those sizes would probably work better.

Lasted looser to prevent tearing? Where did that info originate?
It wasn't good wording, but I've seen it discussed that shell can't be stretched as tightly as calf or it can tear. This being a reason shell shoes generally fit looser out of the box. The likelyhood of it tearing during lasting is a reason AE didn't want to do unlined shell towards the end of MTO. Is my memory/understanding faulty? I don't want to spread my mistake if so.

You need not go far in your search to find guys taking about shell ripping during the lasting process. Personally, I have seen old cowhide and calf rip during lasting. The big difference between calf and shell is basically skin vs. membrane. You need not any more of an exotic explanation.
