Do the Carlyle's normally go on sale when they do their semi-annual? Really have my eye on the Oxblood's and just waiting to see if I can get them without paying full price.

    1. "Military hem" refers to the angled hem. "Full," "slight" and "no" refer to the front break, if any."

    2. Trying to lighten a darker shoe with lighter cream is usually a waste of time. The reverse, though, can be done.

    3. I wouldn't try to change the color of a belt (bourbon or otherwise) with cream or wax. Not unless you want to risk getting it on your clothes.

    4. Respectfully, I think some go too far trying to perfectly match belt to shoes. I think, as far as color goes, there's really no need for more than four colors of dress belts: black, dark brown, lighter brown, and burgundy. So I wouldn't sweat trying to find the perfect chili or bourbon. Of course, I didn't have the 64 crayola box when I was a kid.[IMG]

As @billikenman indicated. You aren't mixing the pigments between the leather and the polish like you would when mixing paint or clay. You are putting a transparent color over an opaque color. When applying a darker transparent color over a lighter base, the outer layer absorbs more and reflects less light than the leather underneath it, while some light still passes through and allows the original characteristics of the leather to reflect what is left. However, it simply doesn't work when a lighter transparent color is put on a darker base. Because the outer coat is absorbing less light than the leather underneath it, it simply isn't doing anything while still transparent. The permanent pigment (edit: of the leather) can never be made to absorb less and reflect more light than it did unless it is blotted out with pure wax, which has no characteristics of leather. It would look like a flat chili colored mess of wax instead of leather. Think about painting over a wall. The pigments don't mix if the paint was dry, and it would take many coats of a transparent pink to overcome a dark red, while it would only take one coat in the other direction.

I have a Tan Gobi, and a Loden Dundee 2.0 (a Katmai as well). I feel the opposite. Though i really like/love the Gobi, I definitely prefer my Dundee's. Then again, I also prefer leather soles to dainite in most cases. In the end, I'm glad I have something in leather, dainite, and mini-lug.

I agree. Trying to change the belt color with cream seems like a good way to end up buying a new belt once you ruined the other one.

I like being close on the belt to shoe color, but matching the style of the shoe with the belt. My belt for my strands is a bit flashier than what my belt for the Carlyle's will be.

As a follow up to my question, I have now received the Rutledge shoes and they are, indeed, roomier and they fit very similar to a 201 last. By this, I mean, they are not too tight in the vamp and they seem a bit on the long side. I think that is just part of the sleekness they try to obtain with the 333. Their description is, "slightly elongated profile and softer line at the outer edge, with a square shape for a more European or chiseled toe." It is the first pair of shoes I have had in a while that did not require an immediate trip to the cobbler for a stretch of the vamp. The balmoral laces even close nicely! I also agree with those who have noticed a distinct difference in feel of the leather quality and lamb skin lining in the Independence line. Quite nice to the touch. Thanks again for the insight and the member who told me to grab them.

Sizing question on the Mora 2.0 -- I'm an 11 E on the Franciscans. Should I get the same size? Thanks

Went to check out the Paramus outlet today.

    The Good

My SA, Kristen, was very good. Well informed, very pleasant, and very helpful. I overheard her speaking with another customer and she's been with AE for 5 years. 15% off sale applies to everything thats not on clearance, and runs until March 19. I wasn't planning on buying any shoes today, shocking as that may sound, but she came close to having me walk out the door with a pair of Hopkinsons. She was also wearing AE shoes.

Edit: I believe Kristen is the store manager, but I didn't ask.

    The Bad

A personal issue for me, very little in my most common size (8E), but thats also true (percentage wise) of ShoeBank. Only 6 pairs in the entire store; Kristen pulled up the entire in-stock list on her computer. Overall, very little 8.5 and below in any width, but its a new store so I'm sure as time goes on, size availability will improve. They seemed very well stocked otherwise, including belts and leather bags.

    The Ugly

Forgive me brothers, I let you down. I forgot to ask if the 15% off would apply to shoes they could order from other outlets or first (which they can also order like a regular retail store). I also found out that this years RDA sale will not apply to seconds like it did last year. I'm hoping that this will change before the sale comes along.

Overall I was impressed by the store. I ended up (over)stocking up on care supplies and trees. Trees were $16.95, and care and cleaning were 15% off. As others have pointed out, Paramus is not most easily accessible place to put a store, and they are not open on Sunday (no stores in Paramus are open on Sunday). If you enter the Mall through Nordstrom Rack and exit that store out the back, AE is the first store on your left at the top of the escalator. Seems to be a pretty decent mall (Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdales Outlet, Neiman Marcus Last Call etc.), but I didn't stick around to check it out.

A little maintenance tonight. I've now used the Dark Chili polish twice on the Walnut Hales. I might pitch the Walnut polish and just buy extra Dark Chili. I haven't reached my goal look yet, but I'm getting there.

I can't do the link on my phone but if you search "NOS Allen Edmonds Imperial" on eBay you will find a pair of new old stock shell wingtips from the late 50's. If you wear an 8C on the Kent last and have an extra $1200 sitting around, these can be yours.

I love the Normandy, in Black. The distressing on the Brown doesn't do it for me. I can't speak to all pairs of black Normandy's, but mine had no distressing on the leather, but the sole edge seemed a little rough. Nothing that some edge dressing didn't take care of. The leather is soooooooo supple.

I have nothing against the Sturgis, but somehow I feel you could do better in another brand and get a pretty similar look.

I was told that the 15% off applies to any non-clearance seconds ordered through their store. I am not sure on firsts. Agree, very limited stock in 8D and below, and not much narrower than D width (but as mentioned, that's usually the case with Shoebank). Most of the sizes were black, walnut and dark brown. I was there on a Saturday, and there was a lot of traffic checking out the shoes/prices and walking out, expecting Aldo/Clarks type of prices. it kind of made me think how privileged and "cursed" I am.

I hear "Aldo" and I think of dog food. I hear "Clark" and I think of cheap Haloween candy.
