Maybe it's the arrival of the autumn weather, maybe it's just changing tastes, but I am beginning to side with those of you who have suggested that I should be looking to pick up a boot or chukka. While I'm not yet sold on the concept of dress boots for myself, I am open to the idea of chukka. The obvious (to me) choice would be the Dundee. From a versatility perspective, I feel it would be between Snuff Suede, Bitter Chocolate Suede and the Brown Grain models. I would appreciate those of you who own these models could throw up some pics of them worn with various trouser options in so that I can evaluate their appearance further. The pics on the website are nice, but I think the bar lacing does not show them at their best. And as always, your opinions on the matter are most welcomed. Thanks!

I'm not much of a boot guy, but if I were to get one, it would be the Higgins Mill in natural color. the 1757 last feels pretty similar to the 511 to me. Wait for another sale, though.

Greetings. First post, and thanks to all on here for sharing their knowledge. I've recently been upgrading the type of shoes I wear and thus far have the Shelton 1.0 burgundy/black saddle, olive and brown Strandmoks, brown shell Strand, golden CXL Long Branch, bourbon Mcallister, and both the brown and natural Higgins Mill. Since my job and life are pretty casual I don't have much need for formal shoes, I don't care for walnut (or might I?) or loafers... I figure I just need something in blue or navy and I can walk away, call it good and forget about shoes until such time as I need something recrafted.

That's how this all plays out, right?

At any rate I have a question about the HM. The natural pair are the picture of perfection. The brown look a little rough around the back, as if the leather had been cut sloppily. Same way on all four sides, but the one pictured is the most egregious. Only visible from a certain angle, so am I being picky or is this something people would return? Also, the heel doesn't sit flat, but I assume that might adjust itself with wear? The natural aren't like that, but I've also worn them about six times versus zero on the brown.

Interesting. I thought that none of the DR shoes could be recrafted. Now I won't be surprising if someone tells me AE can recraft my Maritimes hahaha.

Day off today so I thought I would wear my Higgins Mill Boots. IMO the brown cxl looks way better with the tan laces.

And I also got these today for $147. Good day so far...

I love the tan laces on the brown HM's, but I think I must be the only person on here who doesn't mind the dark brown laces.

Here are a couple of older photos of my brown grain Dundees. I don't know if it helps with your decision, but here they are.

Thank you! My sweaters have been gazing longingly at me for months now and I couldn't ignore them anymore.

Others' opinions may differ, but I'd send those back as quickly as I opened them. If you haven't already, I would call the AE CAC. They will certainly help you out.

Old post, but I wanted to share my experience in case others stumbled upon this thread like I did.

One thing that was not clear to me when I bought Unions was that it was a "webgem" or a limited makeup like the Black Friday models. Those start out on sale and never actually sell at full price, and are thought to have lower QC standards.

My experience is consistent with yours, and with this theory. My first pair had an awful defect that the store associate agreed should have not passed through QC. My 2nd pair had different defects that weren't as bad, but still were not 1st quality. At this point I called CS and they told me that the Unions were discontinued (limited production model) and that there were only a handful left in my size. She told me to send my 2nd pair to her, and she'd order the rest so she could handpick a pair for me.

None of the pairs she received in my size were defect free. [IMG] She had to send the best pair to be touched up before she sent it to me. It's still not perfect but wearable.

I'll pile on here and say that as much as I like AE and own a lot of their shoes, their QC has become (or is) a joke, especially now that they are charging $400 for shoes and $450 for boots.

During the Nordstrom Aniv sale, I went through 3... THREE pairs of strands that ALL had defects that would not pass QC of any reasonable shoemaker. Problems with the cap toes not being cut properly, not being straight, and problems with the lasting or welt stitch. I ended up returning all 3, and im not particularly picky about minor things like small leather stretch marks or creasing issues.

It seems every 2nd picture of strands online have a problem with the edge of the captoe not being cut properly, which to me is not acceptable on a shoe of this cost.

When the RDA sale comes up I am going to have a CS person personally inspect my shoes before they are shipped out, and hopefully get a pair that its actually 1st quality.

And this isn't even getting into all the recent problems with the HM boots, of which im going to be on my 3rd pair when AE processes my 2nd exchange.

My local SM said that the first batch of the HMs were really good. Then the next batch (i.e. corresponding to the sale) had extensive problems. Problems that he deemed as "shouldn't even be sold as seconds."

Never helps in the midst of the hassles, but at least AE CS is always willing to take care of us.

FYI, lots of new "old" styles are popping up on shoebank. Some of it is the less great stuff, but it's worth a look. Also, I never knew AE made shoes exclusively for the Rack..

AE's customer service is their saving grace, but having to return/exchange multiple pairs over and over again for every different style to get something that is acceptable is wearing my patience thin. Especially now that they are creeping into the price territory of many other shoemakers which put out products with much higher-end finishing.

First time poster. I finally upgraded to AEs during the Nordstrom anniversary sale. Love my black park avenues but my dark chili Cornwallis are showing some creases I didn't expect (especially after only 4 wears). In addition to the knuckle there are some small creases into the baroquing on the toe and several along the inside.

Having never paid more than $80 for a pair of shoes before, am I overreacting or is this a valid concern?

    Thanks

I hear ya. Pretty frustrating to make 3 trips to the post office to return ship defective shoes. This has happened to me on multiple pairs. Nice that AE keep shipping out additional product, but at some point I'd wish they compensated me for the hassles.

Your creasing is fine. You'll get the same thing on shoes costing much more. The Cornwallis is a beautiful shoe (I'm wearing my shell ones today too)!

As for all the AE QC commentary, AE's done far better than Alden has for me this year... Good luck trying to get them to take back a slightly slanted cap toed shoe.
