That is my understanding. There may be more models included in the sale, but I could not say. The SA probably tailored his response based on the shoes I've been asking about.

Yep. My bourbon McAllisters were seconds and they had no flaws except tiger stripping, which i fixed. On the other hand, my dad got a pair of McGregor 2nds that the only issue was a misalignment of the seam that runs down the back of the shoe, which of course nobody would ever see, but the color was about as good as you can expect from bourbon.

The Vernons seem to be somewhat better quality than their normal shoes. They have a dove tail heel and the sole itself feels like it's more like the Indy line shoes rather than my other calf shoes. They are really sharp.

What did you do about tiger striping? Many firsts seem to have it in Chili. And my 5th have some, I kinda like it actually as it is uniform. But curious how you cleared it up.

I just refreshed the page to see if the Carlyles were still there and of course a pair of Bourbon Strands popped up. I've been reserving strands/bartletts for walnut color but this is tempting. Problem is I have 5th Ave in the color and if I got the strands I'd never wear the 5ths. I think I just answered my own question on which to get.

Yeah, but that millionth pair clearly didn't need recrafting yet, plenty of wear left on that sole!

Looks like glue to me; I have a pair with what looks like that on the inside. I think it is what holds the insole down. But I'm totally guessing, I'll take some pics when I get home if I can remember which shoes it was.

I striped the shoe of the factory burnishing with some cleaner & acetone and burnished it myself with some black polish. They aren't perfect, but look a lot better then they did prior to my intervention. Try at your own risk.

Also, mine weren't uniform. One shoe was pristine, the other was probably about as bad as tiger stripping can get.

Why would you never wear the 5ths if you got the Strands? I make a point to rotate my shoes, regardless of how much I like them over other pairs.

I have a pair of bourbon Strands that I'm trying to sell. Are you an 11D by chance?

That's bold. Yea mine are just in between cap and the lacing and once I get some creasing in there will probably be un noticeable. I would for do more harm than good with acetone. And my wife already yells at me for the smell of shoe polish enough :)

Sadly not. I have enough to rotate during the week that I'd find myself reaching for the strands every time. I originally wanted to get the strands in bourbon but they were long gone. A pair has made it back after a long absence in my size. Could be fate or could be a pair of bad shoes. If I sold them I guess that would be another story. Unfortunately the strands are at the CAC and they won't tell me anything about them.

As others have said, have another outlet store order them for you to inspect. I'm lucky I suppose as I live 15 mins from a retail AE store and about 1.5 hours from an outlet.

I'm about 30-60 (traffic dependent) from the DC store(s), but about 3-4 hours from the Paramus outlet (closest to me). Might be worth the drive for the Memorial Day sale if they have more than one pair I'm eyeing in stock...

I've eyed up the Vernons in saddle brown/chili for several years now, but just don't tend to wear suits very much and I tend not to wear balmoral shoes with chinos. At one point recently I was thinking again about getting them, and then suddenly the Cornwallis was introduced. I feel like that shoe is a wonderful substitution/update in a similar style. Or, at least, it fills the same niche. I got a pair and Walnut for a crazy deal, but I really want the Cornwallis in a darker leather. I would've said dark brown was the only obvious choice, but now I see that they are making dark chili ones for Nordstrom.

    Both are great looking shoes.
