http://www.npr.org/2011/11/06/141934309/first-listen-childish-gambino-camp

holy ****. witty one liners, introspective race issues, black dude wearing BoO and short shorts, actor/rapper/fame issues. a few misses there and production kinda sucks, but fantastic.
dude needs to stop singing, but damn these lines are gold

ballin since 83
half of em say gay
maybe that's the reason i like lady what baby's say

They real black like won't show up on your camera phone
They real black like turn the flash on your camera on

I love *****, I love bitches, dude, I should be runnin’ PETA

******* is like an accent mark, it’s all about the over Es

Gambino is a coat hangers, **** you, pay me
Brand new whip for these niggas like slavery

Put my soul on the track like shoes did
Played this for my cousin, now he can’t even think straight
Black and white music? Now, *****, that’s a mixtape

But niggas got my feelin' I ain't black enough to go to church
Culture shock at barber shops cause I ain't hood enough
We all look the same to the cops, ain't that good enough?
The black experience is blackened serious
Cause being black, my experience, is no one hearin' us
White kids get to wear whatever hat they want
When it comes to black kids one size fits all

If I'm a ****** spell it right, I got way more than two G's

Forget these white girls
I need some variation
Especially if she very Asian
She got an ugly friend? Roll solo
Can I stay at your place? No hobo
Not my fault, man, these ladies love me
She's an overachiever cause all she do is succeed

and more

some of the lines are incomplete, not well thought out

eg ***** got signed, its an anomaly / No cosine, trigonometry

Or you can fuckin’ kiss ******, Human Centipede

Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony

Can you explain me why Drake is so "successfull"?
I just dont get it. His flow, lyrics and everything are weak.
How come the YMCMB marketing schemes can be so productive? The guy is on every track, rapping like a newbie.

For one thing, the reason he's so popular is because he's so popular. He's on a record label that promotes him and its other main artists aggressively. If you climb on top of a tall building and throw **** at everybody you'll actually manage to hit someone that likes being shat on or in Drake's case, lots of people. Also, he works with good producers and has an ear for a hook. He is one of the few popular mc's that has a distinctive identity going for him.

That said, I agree with you and would also argue that another main reason he is a successful popular hip hop artist, besides the distribution machine mentioned earlier, is that the popular hip hop audience doesn't know anything about hip hop. Just like popular audiences don't know anything about film, music, or any other art form. It's all consumption!

Drake has a great ear for beats and his candidness is appreciated in small doses. But god damn it, something about him just grates my nerves. I'll be in search of an instrumental version of his album, because it's great sonically.

Isn't there a way to strip an artist's vocals from the music, and to just have the music? I know you can always buy an instrumental album, but I'm more of a DIY kind of guy.

LPs of hip hop albums and singles sometimes have the instrumentals on the flip side, otherwise the only method I know of resorts to muting the vocal range of frequencies selectively (but not capable of isolating the vocal track itself). I'm sure there is something better by now.

Never not listening to Gambino. If this is your first encounter I highly suggest you download Culdesac. Some epic **** to be had.

Agreed. While it might be impossible to pin down who was the first to embrace this new marketing scheme, I initially think to Radiohead posting their album on a website and allowing listeners to pay what they felt was acceptable or not pay at all.

I'd say the artist who truly embodies your stated philosophy and follows it to a tee would be Girl Talk. Granted, he is more or less handcuffed.

So this may be a weird request but I am looking for some clean/positive hip hop. I do private baseball instruction for kids as young as 7 and am tired of listening to country so I am looking for some good suggestions for artists/albums that I can play while instructing.
