Alfred Sargent Handgrade - Pictures

these are before and afters- couple years down the track from when these first appeared in this thread. 1st generation (I think) handgrades, and I'd asked Chay to do a reddish-brown. When I got them I decided there was too much burgundy for my taste, taking into account the already eye-catching buckles and medallion, so put them on the window sill for the sun to burn the red off. This is the result. 1st is the original, rest are now. I like it- shoos got character and a nice patina, tho that doesn't show up so well in the pics. meh- got carrie awy with the photography

Hope you put some Pecards on them at the end of the sun process.

The good people of AS were able to make the bellows tongue in shell too. Really looking forward to wearing them on a wet ride.

Is it a full MTO with a new pattern design or did you start from an existing model?
Very good choice and I am really looking forward the seeing the final result because I would like something similar.

Thank you. Started w/ the Holburn boot, then addeded 2-3 inches of height and a bellows tongue.

Those boots have one naughty shaft. Hopefully the pull tabs will last, several members have had theirs broken. Apparently shell doesn't last very well due to the tab's horizontal stitching, they become like metro ticket corners.

Those were in the G&G thread but no doubt the same principle applies to all manufacturers.

Hence why RM Williams has always put the pull tabs inside the boot heel spine.

R.M Williams are really very solid and functional. Trickers does this too. Actually, I once asked for suede pulls, and they absolutely refused, on the basis that they would be too fragile. Leather does not take some types of pressure nearly as well as does, for example, nylon or silk. I really like Alfred Sargent boots, and wear them, but they are not really meant to be functional field boots.

And thanks for the warning about pull tabs tearing. On the one hand, I've had a pair of calfskin AS Miller boots for a couple years now, and the pull tabs have held up well, despite my straining them so much I've ripped a couple pairs laces trying to get them on. And since these are blucher boots with a generous amt of hooks, I think there's less strain on/off. On the other hand, Myron Glaser of Glaser Designs once showed me how shell -- for all its abrasion and puncture resistance -- is easy to tear once it gets a cut. And your pt about perforations makes sense, VRavio. So I'll try to be careful w/ them.
