I bout a pair of Alden for BB penny loafers and the stitching is coming out of the vamp. I only bought them about a month ago and have worn them maybe 10 times. 3 out of 4 corners of the vamp are coming undone. Im just worried that eh whole strap might now be compromised.the shoes fit fine out of the box and were never tight or too snug.

heres pictures of each.

Return them to BB. They are generally excellent for this type of customer service issue.

Could be a fit issue. Could be a construction issue. The fact that it happened on both shoes, leads me to believe that it's a fit issue. I find it hard to believe that someone messed up both the left and right shoes in a pair, unless they were new & in training.

well one side is perfectly fine still with no issue at all on one shoe but 3 out of 4 is an issue. I just don't want to exchange for it again and have it happen again. they are a size 12 and ive got a thumbs space from the toe... im not sure how they could be too small.

This means nothing. Thumb spacing is something shoe salesmen use on children's shoes.

IF there is a fit issue, it is probably in the vamp. Your foot may be too large around in the area around the strap. There is more to fit than just length and width.

so if this was the case how would i be sure that i get the right fit. Would going to a 13 be right or would I want a wider width?

Id try them on but because BB is such a great retailer they only carry up to an 11 1/2 at my local store in any shoe size.

Heavy handed use of shoe trees can also cause stitching to rip out. If that's not the case, I can't see how even poor-fitting Aldens should have this problem and I'd return them.

My guess is a 13 might be too long and you still might not have enough room in the vamp.
Sometimes a last just won't work for you no matter what size you get. You may have to shop for an alternative loafer if the problem is indeed the fit.

+1. Brooks Brothers has a very liberal return policy. Even more so if you have a salesperson you're cool with. I had a cashmere cap that had a snap break after like six months and they took it back.

That particular loafer is notoriously tight across the vamp. The stitching has broken on mine as well. Alden will fix it, but it'll probably do it again. I think you need a very thin foot.
