I'm starting my summer gig at a NYC biglaw firm in a few weeks. I currently only have a four shoe rotation, and I'm looking to add a fifth.

Current rotation:

Black captoe - Alden
Brown captoe - RL/C&J
Black wingtip - Barker Black
Tan wingtip - BB/C&J

I also have a nice pair of black suede bit loafers from Alden. Would those work? They're actually dressier in appearance than the black leather version of the same shoe, if that makes sense.

As for the thread title - would a cordovan chukka in that shade be considered appropriate for that particular milieu?

Yes, both shoes are fine for big law. I don't wear loafers, but I wear cordovan chukkas (including cigar) in my business casual wardrobe. If you are wearing a suit, wouldn't recommend either shoe.

A full spread picture of your entire rotation is appropriate to assist us

loafers and suede are too informal for a law firm as are tan wing tips

Chukka boot is an informal shoe and brown is an informal color for a law firm

On weekends and evening wear for as stroll on the town or out to dinner...the brown cordovan chukka sounds great

Right. Dress code is business casual.

This seems a little extreme. But perhaps I'm mistaken.

That's what I was concerned about. I'd like to get something in cigar shell while it is available at the Alden NY shop, but for that price I'd like to get something I could wear for both work and play. Thought the chukka might work. Perhaps not.

I'm not a big fan of the light-colored soles Alden uses with Cigar, especially for business wear. I have the Alden shell plain toe blucher in shell and find that the sole is too light for business wear. However, I've worn my cigar longwings so much that the sole has darkened enough to no longer stand out.

I agree. I don't wear my Alden chukkas for business wear for this reason.

Can Ron's shell boots/shoes be resoled? For some reason I am under the impression they cannot.

I think so. From what I gather, the equipment isn't as common as for Goodyear welting, but Ron can always have them resoled for you. At least that's the case for calf, and I don't think shell would be different. But Ron could tell you for sure.
