Sure. I got the monogram because it doesn't add materially to the cost of the shirt and it comforts me to know that it is there. When I die my children will be able to open my closet and see all my beautiful things with my name monogramed on them and will remember something about their father: he was a tremendous pain ********** who spent much to much time worrying about clothing.

The placket: for the most part I prefer symmetry to asymmetry in my tailored clothing. Now, I'm not going to start demanding that both lapels be notched, and I'm not going to invent the second breast pocket, and once in a while I get a ticket pocket, but I wouldn't want an asymmetrical line down the middle of my body and I think this placket best creates symmetry.

I can't see how mine would come off as affected. It is literally below the trouser line and can't be seen while the shirt is being worn.

Well yes, it wouldn't be considered affected if nobody saw it (by definition). I do think they can come off as affected, however, on certain people (if seen). They're often used by arrivistes who wish to seem more blue blooded. Or by people who buy MTM shirts from China, and want to telegraph to everyone that their shirt is custom. A monogram is the cheapest way to make something look expensive, which is kind of the textbook example of affectation.

That said, I think some people pull them off well. If you have a certain kind of grace, or just seem like the sort of person who has always worn shirt monograms without thinking about them, they give a different meaning. But like contrast shirt collars, they're more often done poorly than well.

I'm starting to like the direction in which this thread is heading. Lord superb - I really like your look (pocket circle nothwithstanding) but to me it feels more summer conservative business dress than WSIMCBD.

Also, at a to the g to the jiffy, please tell us about appropriate WSIMCBD socks for the WS meetings that apparently neither of us attends. When I don't go to those meetings, I want to make sure that no one laughs at my socks. Which are monogrammed with my #StyFoDude handle, but I would never show anyone--even this board--because that would be affected.

Not quite DWW - although this is solid snark. Lord Superb is currently squarely within the confines of conservative business dress and I don't see any attempt to apply his personal style in a way that expresses his likes and dislikes as an individual but also doesn't push it so far and remains tasteful enough so that he doesn't risk losing his bonus. I don't see Lord Superb as much as I see Squire Regular. A hidden monogram is a good way of moderating the potentially bonus-reducing desires to express personal style that led him to want a monogram in the first place, but it's not WSIMCBD.
