Aging jeans

I would love to buy some designer jeans but I have two problems: I don't like how low most of them (at least the boot cut ones) sit, and the price is a real turn-off.

Is there a way to give cheaper jeans that premium denim look? Levi's 517s are some of my favorite fitting jeans, but there are no good washes. I remember reading something once about using a pumice stone and blue dye or maybe even a denim wash house?

Alternately, is there a designer boot cut jean that is narrow through the leg, doesn't sit too low on the waist (maybe just below) and can be had for close to $100?

Thanks

A friend of mine runs a pretty large business aging jeans for the likes of everyone from PDC to Diesel. So yes, of course it can be done.

How it's done is the trick. He uses big industrial washers, special chemicals, and hand treatent (e.g. beating the jeans with a board that has screws driven into it). I think you could do it yourself, but you might ruin a few pair of jeans before you mastered the art.

The major problem for me with the cheap jeans is the fabric. It's too rough or something, it's hard to explain, but I don't think they use the same weave, and the yarns aren't twisted as tightly or something. If you just wanted to beat up a pair of jeans to try it, you could wash and dry them multiple times, and use some sandpaper to add wear. I don't think you will end up with the look you're after, though, unless you find some made with good denim in the first place.
