Have you been to one? I had this delightful British experience when I was on an Ocean Liner. It was a white glove tea service. Scones, sandwiches, pastries and other goodies were served. I'm going to an afternoon tea today and meet friends at the Patisserie at the Bazaar. http://www.tastingtable.com/entry_de...the_Bazaar.htm Don't know what to wear... ha ha.

Aged relatives used to take me to tea when I was little at their clubs or places like Fortnums, but sadly not something that happens any more. It is great fun, a fresh scone with clotted cream and jam is pretty heavenly. The place you are going looks a little more avant garde, should be fun. No idea what you should wear, have a good time.

I've been to afternoon tea several times at the Willard Hotel in DC. Although, I think high tea at the Bazaar is probably going to be less "fancy" since it's LA. I'd actually expect most people there to not know what high tea was, and those that are venturing to try it, will likely show up in the usual LA jeans and untucked dress shirt.

I've been meaning to try the Bazaar, but from the reviews I've read, it's basically just a mixing and matching of Andres' menus from Cafe Atlantico, Jaleo, and the Minibar. Seeing as I've been to all three of those places, I can't see myself in a rush to try the Bazaar. Although, the chef of VOLT in Frederick, MD did tell me his brother is the chef de cuisine at the Bazaar, and that if I ever did go, to say hi to him.

I met a friend in the lobby of the Peninsula in Kowloon last year. Neither of us were staying there, it was just a convenient meeting point. We actually considered the afternoon tea for a moment, given its history and pomp, but instead wound up throwing down pints in mid-levels instead.

FYI-- and this is like knowing the difference between semi-formal and formal evening wear-- "high tea" is not an elegant occasion. It is a workingman's supper, pretty much whatever the wife is able to throw together as the sun was going down. If you check out "Foyle's War," there is one featured at his lieutenant's house. His estranged wife pulls a shepherd's pie out of the oven, and there is either tea or beer to drink. "High" refers to the height of the table: the kitchen table in this case.

"Afternoon tea" is the variety with sandwiches, scones, and choices between Darjeeling and Ceylon. Served at a low table.

Thanks Concoridafor the clarification. I did go to the "Afternoon Tea" at the Bazaar and was disappointed. It's nothing at all like I expected. I was expecting a more traditional white glove service. Next time, I'll try the Hotel Bel Air.
