Affordable Lodging in NYC?

I'm planning a trip to NYC in December with my wife and am looking for a clean place to stay that is budget friendly. I'm not in to sharing a bathroom, which counts out all of the hotels I can find under $350 a night. I don't care about fancy amenities, wireless internet, a flat screen TV in the room...just clean and cheap...just a place to sleep. I need to hold on to the $$$ to spend on clothes and food

This may be a tall order, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Whenever I had to travel to NYC the first place I would go is Craig's List. You will save a bundle renting out someone's apartment for a few days instead of hounding out a hotel.

My only advice is to make sure the poster has PICTURES up and maybe even some references. Don't go somewhere that looks fishy and if it seems like too much of a bargain you may wake up without your kidneys. I stayed at this guy's place in the upper west side for a few nights: he did this thing so often he had a book of delivery menus, maps, tips, etc. Full kitchen with pots and pans, fridge, oven, large bathroom, everything clean and orderly. Three nights for 380.

Well, I used to stay in Chelsea Lodge, which is what you describe -- clean, no frills, private bathroom, no view. It was even a little charming. It is cheap for NYC -- double occupancy at ~$130 or so, but really and truly fine in every way. For a funkier vibe, try the Gershwin Hotel, with a range of lodging from hostel-like to suites. Both are googleable. Then I found orbitz and was able to book starred hotels for the $250 range. Last time I stayed in the Carlton, and there are a variety of boutique hotels that show up around there. $200 is doable also. ~H

Last time I stayed in NYC, it was a spur of the moment trip. American Express had some very good rates. We stayed in the Hilton Garden Inn on 48th for somewhere around $130 and it cost $26 to park my car overnight next door. Just keep looking. If you're there over a weekend especially in December the rates are going to be fairly high. I'd try calling Amex or Mastercard and see what their hotel rates are, will probably be the best deal.

Stayed at the Blue Moon hotel on the lower East side. Nice and clean, in a fun area, and more importantly, my wife loved it.

I use tripadvisor.com. Just type in New York City hotels and they will come up ranked by popularity. I would stay at the cheapest highly ranked hotel possible. I find the user ranking system to be very accurate and timely. The user reviews are helpful and full of travel tips too including things to do near the hotels.

I believe that Habitat Hotel on east 57th Street is relatively inexpensive.

I wouldn't know, I only rent the Pres. suite at the Carlyle.

Try to reserve your room as close to your trip as possible. Many hotels would rather rent a room at a bargain rate than let it go empty. I have gotten rooms in nice Midtown hotels for $150-$200/night that way.

old thread but looking for new suggestions, wanted to go at the end of the month and any reasonably priced hostel is booked up. started looking into vacation rentals but i'm not informed well enough between the reals and the fakes. any places you guys could refer me to?

I also did the Priceline 4 star hotel midtown recently and got the W (on Lex) once and the Hilton at Grand Central another time, both for like $185 a night.

I had a deal at the Paramount recently for less than $200 but the rooms aren't big enough for two.

yeah i don't really have that sort of money to be spending. hostel funds (40-50 a night max) is about what i want to spend because i'll be going by myself and for 9-10 days
