AE Walnut Strand Burnishing?

So I just picked up a new pair of AE Walnut Calf Strand's. Actually I ordered them after I tried some on in Nordstrom's because they didn't have an E width. After seeing so many beautiful pics of them I was a little underwhelmed with the color. Just because I have seen so many that have somewhat of a burnishing or color variation in the leather. The ones I received are pretty consistent. Is this normal? Where does the great color variation come from? Wear over time? Polishing?

As you can probably tell I am fairly new to quality leather shoes. But it has me wondering when I see pic like this:

It took only a few months and regular polishing for mine to look like this. Polish regularly with the AE walnut polish and they will darken and take on this reddish hue very quickly.

I posted this on the AE thread, but all of my pairs came with burnishing like that.

It should patina with age though

Thanks for the replies. I figured it must of been a little of both. I will take a look at the pair again at Nordstroms and see how much difference there is with mine.

Yeah sorry about the double post, being a new poster my first post didn't show up. I guess they review it first.
