A different fit? i bought a pair of McClains in a size 10.5 D, which are built on their #8 last. They fit great.

I then bought a pair of Cliftons (also built on #8 last), same size and width. These shoes, however, have some heel slip. I am surprised at this. Wouldn't shoes of the same size and built on the asme last fit nearly identically?

Anybody else have an experience like this?

Yes, same as the PAs and Soho for me.

I think PAs and the Soho are on different lasts. The PA is on the 5 and the Soho on the 0.

Yes, they are different lasts... the PA is too narrow for me, the Soho has a wider toe area and narrow heal.

In answer to the OP's question... IMO there can be some variation on how the shoes fit because of the uppers, even on the same last.
For example, I found that cap toes versus brogued cap toes will "bend" in a different place, making them feel different. It's small, but it make the fit/feel different.

Was it a stock upper+last combo? any chance it was a special order?

Yes I have had this problem before, a size 9 Mora fits the same as a size 9.5 Margate for me, even though they are both on 8.

I chalk it up to Allen-Edmonds inconsistency in manufacturing.

I just thought the uppers all have slightly different shapes, which is why they're different styles to begin with, even if the last is the same. I don't know that is a manufacturing problem...

They are both lace-ups; the McClain is an Balmoral and the Clifton is a Blucher.

They weren't special orders, but one pair was a factory second bought from the AE Shoe Bank. The other was a pair (the one that was my reference shoe for fit) bought from an AE retail store.

You could buy three pair of AEs, same model, marked the same size and width and (obviously) same last and they could all be of measurably different sizes, no matter being marked the same. This is a puzzle, but a fact, backed up by others. I've had several AEs where this was the case. An 11d, last 4, model (fill in blank) placed beside another 11d, last 4, same model, and they were of significantly different proportions.

I know that AE occasionally phases out a last and replaces it with another. In this way a shoe that was produced on an old last numbered 4 might be very different from a new shoe labeled a 4 last. I am not saying this is the case, as your shoes are both currently in production, but I suppose it's possible.

that could be causing the slips... The different lacing structures could impact where your foot sits in the shoe. Bal might keep it further back if it's too low, or keep it snug if right. Or, Blutchers may be looser so the foot moves around more, etc. But yes, I don't think it's unreasonable to have it fit a bit differently.

There are things you could do to compensate...
Thicker/Thinner socks, heel/ankle padding, it may be as simple as breaking them in for a few days.

I've had this experience even with the same style: I bought the Lexington (#1 last) in black, and it is a good fit, as the #1 last usually is for me. I also tried on the Lexington in chestnut and in merlot. I did not like the fit of either. Nothing beats actually trying on shoes you are contemplating purchasing.

I'm a 8.5e in PA and 5thAve, do you think a 8.5D in leeds might work?

Thanks?

Not AE but Loake; I have a suede chukka boot (Pimlico) that is considerably more generous than a calf leather shoe (Knightsbridge) of the same size and last. The Knightsbridge had to be stretched to fit. So to some extent it's a matter of materials used and upper design.
